Chase Young has had a great year, but personally don’t think he should be invited to New York. Just wondering if Derrick Thomas was a finalist the season he had 27 sacks even though they weren’t officially recorded which is stupid? As an LSU fan who was a chiefs fan growing up I loved Thomas. Absolute legend and class act

I don’t believe so, but he should’ve been. He’s my favorite all time Bama player

I think he was like 10th on the list. Chase Young couldn’t sniff DT’s jock. Chase Young sucks compared to DT

Other than Charles Woodson
I think Hugh Green was the closest defensive player to winning the Heisman from 1980 To now

ETA: it was actually Te’o

He finished 10th. Defensive players are rarely considered these days, even with more open minded voters. They were completely ignored then.

But 1988 was also the year Barry Sanders won.

He was probably getting some co-ed pregnant that night.

I think there needs to be more defensive players in the Heisman discussion

That's all good and everything but, you can't really compare Thomas to modern players.

Thomas played his NFL career almost completely in the 90's, starting in 1989. His years in the NFL were from 20 to 30 years ago.

Players today are better, stronger, faster, smarter, and hit harder and play stronger than those old dinosaurs.

Derrick Thomas would be a joke in the NFL today. They didn't have good nutrition back then, didn't eat right. They didn't have modern day weight training regimens.

Chase Young is ten times the player Thomas was just because he was born in a more enlightened and advanced era. 300 pound OLinemen are as fast today as Thomas was back then; it's the evolution of the game.

Derrick Thomas could single handily take over and win games like he did against Penn St in 1988. He was special for sure.

Derrick Thomas may have been the most dominant defensive player ever. Pretty close between him and Reggie White, who was pretty damn near unblockable.

Here is a list of Defensive Linemen who were Heisman Finalists. I don't see anything on the page about linebackers, but his Wikipedia page says DT finished 10th in the Heisman race.

It's okay to acknowledge when other teams' players have good seasons. Young is a 1 man wrecking crew. He's top of the draft good. He set the record for PFF grade earlier in the year. He's impacted games about as much as a defender could.

I wouldn't give him the Heisman though, but he's worthy of getting an invite unlike someone in 2012. What a joke a year voting that was.

I never saw him play but I really enjoyed his NFL films tribute. Seems like a great guy.

Wow, I don't think I have ever seen "class act" & Derrick Thomas in the same sentence. Incredible football player, but C'mon Man! Wonder what his 7 kids and 5 baby mommas think about him?

Class Act?

"Derrick Thomas 7 kids by 5 women at the time of his death at age 33 in 2000 Thomas left no will, and his children’s mothers filed suit with the probate court for a share of his $1.16 million in assets, touching off a lengthy court battle".
