No team ranked below the top 20 in defense has won the national title in the playoff era; the last team to win it period was Auburn in 2010.
I don't think LSU breaks the trend. Their defense has to get a lot better really fast.

We can’t compete with the Clemson’s and Alabama’s of the world right now on D. Hell, I don’t think we could beat Wisconsin right now either. Too many question marks on D

I agree with skrayper- Defense wins championships. This is finally a fun LSU team to watch offensively, but at current state we are a two score loss to Bama and Clemson.
That’s said, we have some beasts on defense that have been out... plus Aranda at the helm for scheme corrections. We have some unrealized upside. If things come together we could make a run. As with any championship team-stars have to align. Keep in mind, Bama/LSU loser is not out of it, winner needs to face UGA in ATL.
