Is UF better with Backup QB?

I ask because I sincerely know nothing about the backup. I’m sure there were reasons for Franks being their starter, but from my vantage point he’s always been a pretty crappy QB and mostly a liability.
Is this backup any good, what are his main skill sets? He seemed to do well against Kentucky.

UK, UF, and USCe have all seemed more dynamic with their backups. Bentley and Franks have looked blah when I’ve seen them. The UK qb may have improved but he seemed sketchy last year.

I think we’ll pretty much end up about the same record wise as we would have with Franks. We probably won’t struggle as much with inferior teams like Miami or Kentucky going forward because Trask is more steady and won’t make as many major frickups as Franks did.
But our ceiling this year was highly dependent on Franks taking a leap forward. I don’t think Trask is going to be good enough against the likes of LSU and Georgia.

I agree with you
I think Trask will be much more steady for y'all but even with Franks, your season comes down to your play on the LOS. The offensive line is the most concerning thing for Florida at this time. More consistent QB play will help Florida but for them to get where they want to go, they need better play from their offensive line w/ better push from the interior of their defense.
I notice y'all have players out, multiple starters so staying healthy is probably a concern with the lack of depth in some areas.

There is a reason the backup is a backup. Outside of a few cases where the backup just needed a chance in general the backup will be worse.

Game film will change that. Florida went with a junior that hasn’t had any real game experience but is serviceable for now and got them a win. If he plays a few weeks, good defensive coaches will expose him. I’m not sure why Florida doesn’t go ahead and put Emory Jones in the fire if he is truly good as billed and their future.

Yes. Franks was hot/cold and his frequent mistakes were going to cost UF some games against the SEC's top tier teams.
Now, with a game manager at QB and that defense ... they are a tough out.

Think the back ups have the play calling going differently. Once the defensive coordinators are planning for them. Let's see what they can do.

No one does, he hasn't started a game since middle school. A true anomaly

He's still learning and isn't ready to take the full time job yet. Went 1-5 against UTM.

Our backup is world's better than our starter, unless you have to ask him to complete a few passes to win a game. Other than that, he looks just like Cam.

I've wondered the same about Jones but it doesnt seem to be Mullens style to throw kids into the fire at QB.

They could probably do some wildcat stuff with him in there. He's a very good runner. Maybe sprinkle in some passes (screens). I saw Mullen said they would play both moving forward. While I do think Trask will be the main guy, I imagine Jones would have an expanded role.
Only way you get better is to play.

Trask's strengths (throwing) play into the offense's strengths (WRs, TEs).
Trask has a big body and a big arm. Wouldn't be shocked to see an air-raid lite style offense with Trask against Tennessee.
Mullen's staple has always been the north-south running game, but with this OL, and with the skill players at WR, it may be time to go pass heavy.

Trask will likely be more consistent but he lacks the talent to complete some of the passes that Franks could. I'm not sure if he's the runner that Franks was either.
I think he has a lower ceiling and higher floor compared to Franks but really it's wayyyy to early to tell.
Trask ate UK up when coverage was soft but he wasn't all that great when they brought pressure and DCs are sure to key in on that, especially until he gets more live snaps under his belt. I still don't understand why UK played it so conservative on defense once he was in.

Fair, but its also fair to note when UK did get pressure on him, he arguably threw his best pass of the night to Pitts on the go-ahead TD drive.

I’m not sure what game you watched on Saturday.

If Bryce Thompson plays that would be an interesting matchup. He's been back at practice.

True. Really, there's such a limited sample of Trask in live action that it's hard to say all that much. I think he'll be more consistent than Franks at the very least.
