Oklahoma and Kansas State?

Like Rome, the games have become the property of the emperor's, not the people. Until they address cost outstripping real wages of the average fan they soon find - too late of course - what boxing and equine sports learned when you forget the fans that got you there in the first place.

FIFY

For those not ole enough to remember, US polo drew 40,000 to 120,000 and now they would be lucky to draw 1,000. They went from marketing the masses to marketing the big dollar folks. History repeats itself if you watch and learn the first time.

College football is in decline. The South will be the last section to hang around. The Left Coast is done already....done.

It's just you.

Find some other team than Bama to root for and you might find some joy, somewhere.

What's weird is the lack of great programs in California. The player base alone should have each major program with at least a few 5* athletes.

Maybe the backlash from USC is partly to blame. They used to recruit absurdly, with few athletes but insanely high star averages.

It has to have peaked already so there's nowhere to go but down

Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, georgia, lsu, and Ohio state are pretty much the teams that have a chance at the title.

In the next 5 to 8 years, there might be ten to twelve teams that have a legit shot at the title.

Most conferences outside these few teams are complete garbage.

It's hard to get excited when you know Bama or Clemson is winning the title every year.

The playoffs make the regular season feel like preseason.

The season use to be the good part and the bowls were for fun.

Well, there hasn't been many marquee matchups so far, but once conference play starts, this should improve.

There is a growing talent inequality that has resulted in CFB being very top heavy right now. There are a range of factors that have contributed to this, but skyrocketing recruiting budgets, the popularity of 7-on-7 leagues, the rise football academy high schools, and the ease of attracting attention online are all contributing factors to the talent concentrating with the top teams.

Right now -- we're talking maybe 10-15 programs with a pulse, and everyone else is playing at a lower level. The entire PAC 12 is at that lower level. Even USC, Oregon, and Washington can't keep up.

Not enough marquee matchups. Look at how many people watched Texas vs LSU. This is one of the reasons the networks wants Notre Dame to be a real contender. They bring an audience.

One thing that would help is a name hire at USC. Someone who could actually bring them back to prominence. College football is better when USC is a top 8ish team. If there were more Oklahoma vs Bama type games. I would love to see Oklahoma vs Clemson play now. There needs to be some type of provision put in place to schedule games like this on the fly facilitated by the networks.

Even on a slate that on paper looked so bad like yesterday you can find competitive games that are fun to watch, but OP makes some valid points can’t deny that.

It ain't his fault for winning but Saban destroyed the sport and what made it great. The fact that 2 or 3 schools can cherry pick everyone they want anywhere they want has destroyed the parity in the sport. Its simply too predictable and no one enjoys watching Alabama play against mid majors til November.

It's only going to get worse. And there is only a few things we can do to way fix the issue.

1- reduce the scholarships. Yeah I know but it will create a a more competitive atmosphere. It really needs to be around 70

2- then you have to expand the playoffs. Period. It should be around 12 teams if we really want to help the sport.

But I am like you. It's boring. It's one reason I look at other teams. I already know what games to look at and that's it. Boring.

So it's even helpful to the Bama teams

*Warning:* Mid-40s monologue ahead; proceed at your own risk.

I think it’s a generational thing.
I’m Gen X, and I can’t relate to what you’re saying.

Subsequent “Internet” generations to mine (Generation Y, Millennials, Generation Z) have inflated expectations of reality, leading to unrealistic hopes and chronic disappointment—as evidenced by this thread.

That’s not directed at you; it’s just an overall observation.

Once the game becomes entirely about whether or not your team is in the running for a national championship, it loses its joy factor.

Too many teams scared to play each other ooc because of how the playoffs shite is set up.

1 loss and you’re basically out. The only thing that’ll help is expanding the playoffs imo

Wouldn’t go as far as death spiral but I do think if the trend continues of only 5 or 6 teams making the playoff I do think popularity may take a hit down the road. Maybe 7 or 8 years.

I hate to say it because my team is one of the 6 or 7 but I think it would be good for the game if a couple more teams could become competitive nationally. I think it would be good for the game if a PAC 12 team could be relative in the playoff discussion. I hate Southern Cal but a good Southern Cal is good for the game IMO. So is a good Michigan.
