Oregon got better over time. You can’t just look at point total. Oregon’s offense had like 5 turnovers against AZ. Trust me. I went into last year scared shitless about certain positional depth. Had you told me ISM and Apelu would be out for big parts of the season, I would’ve figured we’d place in the 70s at defense.

Didn’t AZ finish 5-7? Losing is one thing, but that is had to explain. AU lost to TN last year, but I knew neither team was very good.

I am not trying to defend the overall performance in that game. It was neurotic.

You have to remember Oregon was waiting for the other shoe to drop. They had the Alamo bowl disaster, followed by a season where they finished 2nd to last in total defense and missed their first bowl appearance in 11 years, and then in 2017 the shoe drops when Herbert is injured. Then their 2nd coach in as many years leaves them. Cristobal had to fix a very neurotic team. Underlying all that inconsistency was a team not living up to its potential.

I don't think you understand what the last 3 games of the year meant to this defense. Holding on after ASU came roaring back and delivering the final dagger with a sack fumble, Stuffing Jermar Jefferson and making him completely ineffective when Mithcell is out on offense and then holding MSU to 6 points even though the offense was a shite show was something that doesn't happen the past 4 years. They would've folded like a lawn chair.

Anyway, the defense always fed off the offense and finally they said, "bitch, we got this."

I have never been a stats guy when it comes to college football team comparison, because it is apples to oranges due to schedule. But it can be used to gauge a conference. The Pac 12 did not have a team in the Top 25 in total offense (SEC 5) and only had 2 in total Defense (SEC 5). That shows a very mediocre league, without and real quality teams. That has nothing to due with this year, but I keep hearing from people that improvement in average league translates to greatness the following year.

Thanks for all of these quality posts!

Here is hoping to a good game with no injuries.

Win or lose, both teams will still have a lot to strive for this season.

I have a particular infatuation with Nick Coe.

Nick has been a good edge rusher but honestly, Derrick Brown is the guy inside that is going to be the hardest to deal with. He has a very high motor and is just athletically superior to most of the guys he lines up against. He will be a top 10, maybe a top 5 pick in the NFL next year if he stays healthy this year.

Our DLine will only have one new stater this year and it was pretty good last year. Losing Russell will be a hit as he was much better than the credit he got. I know some will not agree but Marlon Davidson has been a disappointment for us. He is a senior now and started playing as a freshman. When he started as a freshman, he looked like he would be a very dominate player. His first few games, he wrecked shite. But that really has not happened. He has been solid but not spectacular like we thought. I am hoping that this year, he will be the beast we wanted him to be 4 years ago.

Our linebackers will be young and aggressive. It will help and hurt us. I see them making some great plays and knocking the crap out of guys but also being out of position a lot. One of our starters/heavy contributors will be a 5* true freshman that is just too talented to sit on the bench. Owen Pappoe.

Secondary will be good for us with a good bit of experience at all positions. I dont see this group being a problem for us. We play a lot of man press coverage and these guys are use to that. Hopefully we will be in a position to blitz a lot this year and pressure the QB like we have in the past. How good the man coverage will decide that.

I think Gus will run a very vanilla offense for the most part. I see a lot of swing passed, short passes with a few deep shots but I think we will try to run the ball as much as he can. After the Oregon game, Auburn has two home OOC games that will give them some time to develop the QB and test things that he probably wont do against you guys. Then our meat grinder continues heading ti TAM

I see the game being very close and probably a 6 point game either way. Your QB gives you a huge advantage in my eyes. For us, a freshman QB playing in such a big game so early, on the road in a NFL stadium will be a mind spinning thing. This is why I think Gus will be very vanilla. I cant imagine the pressure that Bo Nix is under right now. LOL

Looking forward to it.

Reports from Fall Camp are saying Marlon Davidson has activated Beast Mode. Apparently, he's discovered another gear and has been wrecking shop.

The PAC 12 is shite right now. However, I’ve seen a thing or two. The defense is going to be better. If Oregon were the 2nd or 3rd team on you’re schedule, the prediction would be different.

Nick is a lot more than an edge rusher. I might put out some clips of him. There was a play against LSU where he fends off a pulling LSU guard with one arm and gets to the ball carrier with his other that made my jaw drop. The guard was a wide assed dude as well. He’s long, he sets the edge, he’s got pass rush set and he’s freakish at his weight.

Brown is great but he’s going to one thing. Nick is just so versatile. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him work his way into the first round.

Great analysis/write up.

At the end of the day, I will never trust a Pac 12 team on either lines of scrimmage.

Here’s some third party validation

LINK /

Stanford’s 247 site says 3/4 top downlinemen returning in the PAC are on Oregon’s DL.

Although, UW’s Levi O is a blatant omission.
