Why do you guys claim Arkansas' national championship?
Because Alabama has the AP and Coaches poll titles for 1964.

They were dominant because they were the only Big 12 team taking non qualifiers.
Do you mean Big 8 because TEXAS stopped them from doing this and the Mothershuckers got their overalls in a wad.

It’s crazy how hard Nebraska has fallen.

Any ideas on the reason for this?
They've never been the same since they got prison raped by Colorado in 2001. A few years after that, they made a decision to try and modernize their offense by hiring Bill Callahan and it was a complete disaster.

They still had "open enrollment" policies when they won their NC in '95.Im not sure when it stopped.
So I think they were still Big 8
So I think they were still Big 8

Sixty years leaves out Yale and Harvard—who are amongst the 10 all-time winningest teams.
That ain’t right.
(times change ....)

They joined a real conference.
For example:
Arkansas was 13th in wins in the 27 years before they joined the SEC, with 6 conference championships.
In the 27 years since they joined the SEC, Arkansas is 50th in wins, with 0 conference championships.

It is 61 years.
Also just missing that Top 10 is #12 LSU (483), #13 Auburn (477), and #15 Tennessee (465).
So of the Top 15 winningest programs of the past 61 seasons:
*6 are from the SEC
*4 are from the BIG 10 (counting Nebraska)
*2 are in the BIG 12
*1 is in the PAC 12
*1 is from the ACC
*1 is Independent
Imagine how many wins any of the Big 6 would have if our schedules weren't so much more difficult.

Nebraska falling off has more to do with demographics than it does anything else.
1. Small state with slow growth
*Since 1970 its 39th in total growth
*It has zero metropolitan areas with at least 1 million people
*It's second largest city behind Omaha only has 330,000 in the metro area (Lincoln)
2. Very few African Americans
*The state has less than 5% African American population
*Very few African Americans to recruit and its difficult to convince African Americans from far away to come all the way there.
3. Middle of Nowhere location
*There is only one major metro of 1 million+ within 400 miles of campus (Kansas City)
*Compare that to say Nashville, TN who is itself a major metro and is within 400 miles of 9 other major metros with 1 million + residents
You just have to go way too far to recruit decent talent. There's just simply not enough around.

Nice list you got there. Now try the all time wins list.

Alabama will pass Texas there as well.

Why do you guys claim Arkansas' national championship?
Bama claims the more important poll titles... the AP and the Coaches title for that year.

... and the same set of circumstances are part of Arkansas' downfall as well... just not as severe.
Arkansas too is a relatively small state with no major metropolitan areas of 1 million+ residents. While it has far more African Americans than Nebraska, the percent is far less than most other Southern states.
And while its not nearly as remote as Lincon, NE... Fayetteville is pretty far away from a major metro area:
215 miles from Oklahoma City
233 miles from Kansas City
320 miles from Memphis
335 miles from Dallas
357 miles from St. Louis
Not a single major metro within 200 miles.
