The AISA has gone down hill big time. I graduated in ‘07 and after I left, all of the Mobile schools followed. So many players have had great measurables, but we clearly see that doesn’t always mean they will pan out. Thankfully it did with OJ.
Didn’t Irv Smith commit and sign with us on signing day? I think I thought that was just another last minute scholarship we were giving out the roster. He’s become my favorite TE we’ve had under Saban.

Former OL commit from Mountain Brook HS, Tyler Love.
Everyone know his brother, Wilson Love. Worked under Scott Cochran, now is at FAU.

Cyrus Jones. Turned out to be solid.
Ben Damn Davis. Thought he was the truth, from gordo if I remember correctly. Thought he was the next Ragland.

Nikita Stover - Pretty sure he was the #100 player in the country according to Rivals or Scout.
And Kerry Murphy. OMG, he can dunk and do a back flip!!!!!!!!!!
ETA: Oops - Misread the thread title. My bad!

What high school did you attend? If you don't mind me asking.

Mark Ingram was the biggest one for me. Like an earlier poster has said, I was Team Ivan Matchett all the way. Hence my surprise when it was Ingram, and not Matchett, that excelled beyond our wildest dreams.

At this point, any kicker we sign.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Robert Lester. If I remember correctly just about everyone thought he was a throw in for Julio and he turned out to be very solid by the end. I thought Derrick Henry would be a bust due to running so upright and his propensity to want to cut outside at his size.
Players I thought would definitely work out were Michael bowman and Eddie Williams. Bowman seemed like a sure fire stud to put opposite of Julio and Eddie Williams looked like he had the potential to be an all world safety. Also nick perry out of Prattville I thought he would contribute right away even though he had a successful career. I watched him live several times his senior year and became enamored by his athleticism because he wasn’t playing against or with players his caliber. Once at Alabama he was essentially just another guy trying to make it

Forgot one that turned into one of my all time favorites .......Javier Arenas
We had to beat out Florida International/Atlantic for him at the last minute

Bear beat me to it. I wondered why in the hell we offer a scholarship to an undersized CB with offers from FIU and FAU. And I think he was a 2 or 3 star atmost? He is one of my favorite players to have watched now. Nobody could bring the corner blitz like Javy! Then he'd torch your arse with a 75 yard punt return. The guy was a helluva player and I'm glad I had the privilege to watch him and see him win a ring.

I thought Mark Ingram is going to be just average RB.

Brad Smelley, only had 2 offers, signed as a 3 star QB then changed positions. Turned out to be a solid tight end for us & played for the Browns for a season or two.

Cyrus Jones. Thought he would never be a productive DB.

Great answer. Ended being a really good player for us. He is top 5 in career interceptions for an Alabama player, and top 2 for interceptions in a single year.

Ahh, Alphonse Prevail...what might have been.

I remember reading an article about Foster, and one of our former coaches said, when he first got to Tuscaloosa, he thought this kid is either going to be really good or a total bust.

Anthony Madison. He was everyone whipping boy until his senior season. That all changed when FL came to Tuscaloosa and coach Superior decided to go after Madison when FL was inside our 10 yard line. AM knocked down 3 straight passes, and the last one was an emphatic in your face spike of the ball lobbed to the corner.
