Was it Smart and his staff or did the pieces fall into place?

Georgia had an excellent season last year and did better than most expected almost winning a NC.
Was Georgia’s success last season great coaching or did they just have the right roster at the right time?
Georgia fans, how do you feel about this question?

Coaching for sure, Richt had the "right roster" many times but couldn't get over the hump.

Um neither did Kirby?

I feel like it was a bit of both. Kirby obviously came in put it all together and is recruiting like gangbusters. That said, because the mainstream UGA discourse, at least on the message boards, has become so vehemently anti-Richt, I think that most people forget that most of last year's great players (Chubb, Michel, Roquan, etc) were Richt's players. Smart has been able to finally not do less with more.
The way we are recruiting, I hope this trend will continue.
ETA: With 2018 being Kirby's third year, a lion's share of this year's starters will be Kirby's recruits. I think that this year we will see that Kirby Smart is not Terry Bowden, winning his first 20 games with Pat Dye's players and then falling off when they all graduate.

Fair question, and probably a little of both.
The "great coaching" would be more about bringing some energy and toughness post CMR- not like SOS's arrival at UF where he literally changed the way football is played in the SEC.
But Kirby did inherit some really talented dudes who also were total team guys. Last years SR class was not only crazy talented, but legit good kids. That was probably a bit lucky....although one could argue coaching had something to do with that as well.

Richt won 2 SEC championships the hump he couldn't get over was the MNC

Uses capitalization, don't think this one is Phan.

I think it was both. The main cogs were mark Richt players,(Exception of Fromm and Thomas) but make no mistake about it, Smart is recruiting at a high level. Also, Richt had some excellent players and just couldn't get over the hump.

He came closer than Richt did.

Richt never played for the National Championship, either.

Sam Pittman is the difference for the offense.
Kirby/Mel Tucker was the difference for the defense.
It is the coaching for 2 reasons...
1) they can scheme and adjust.
2) they are recruiting ninjas.
Smart brought Fromm. That saved the season.
Pittman brought Andrew Thomas. Coached up a DL to be our Center. Coached up a very good LG into an All American LT.

Him fixing a few things that Richt didn't. It will take Richt's players being gone to see the flaws in Smarts coaching and development.

both. It was great coaching and a solid roster. There wasn't some magic formula.

How many years did Richt try to get over the hump vs. Kirby? Who got closer? The hump doesn't just have to refer to the NC.

Looked like both to me.
They're about to be so talented that they can't NOT win a championship(even multiple).

The only team that will be able to challenge them is Bama. It’s going to be the old Florida/LSU - Alabama SEC.
