I don't travel much, but wanted to do something different this year.

Seattle and San Diego are amazing. Ton of outdoorsy stuff in the Anchorage area. Las Vegas is fun if you have money to spend. Just depends on what you're looking to do.

DC is good if you've never been.

I can think of a lot of cities, depending on what you want to do. Also depends on the time of year. I wouldn't suggest Vegas in the middle of summer, nor would I suggest Chicago in the middle of winter.
Vegas
DC
Nashville
Chicago
Charleston
Jackson Hole
New Orleans

If you live is SC, get out of the Southeast. It's easy to go to Nashville, Charleston, etc. and you can make those trips almost anytime you want. If you don't travel often, do it big.

I went on a road trip last year with the main stop being in Rapid City, saw the badlands, the black hills, Rushmore- it's so beautiful there and so different in it's beauty than that around here. Would recommend.

I love the DC area, but as a word of advice for any traveler... take a minute or two to memorize the rail system and then just ride the train everywhere in town. Don't drive in DC (and be prepared for ragequits driving in Old Town Alexandria) unless you absolutely have too. It is much easier, once you factor in the cost of parking its a lot cheaper.
The Smithsonians are great and for the more jaded adults among us you can amuse yourself watching Senators and Congressmen, in a rare moment of bipartisanship, picking up street walkers on K Street and hanging out in the many titty bars in DC.

New York, San Diego, San Francisco. Visit all three before you die.
If you make it to those, then visit Boston and Chicago next.

Never been to Seattle, Boston, or San Francisco, but some of my favorite travel destinations in the U.S. are Chicago, San Diego, Gatlinberg, Denver, Santa Fe, Austin, San Antonio, New Orleans, and New York City.

All good choices given. I'll throw out a few under the radar places that have been fun in my work travels. I enjoy outdoorsy stuff like mountain biking and I like having beers and watching live sports.
Milwaukee - Go see a Brewers game, eat drink and be merry. Cool downtown scene.
Pittsburgh - Great mountain stuff to do nearby, great bike. Steelers game of course! Also catch the Penguins, great atmosphere.
Santa Fe, NM. Amazing landscapes, great in the winter if you like skiing and great in the summer if you like exploring the mountains. Gets a little warm but nothing compared to the SE with summer humidity.
Roanoke. Lots of civil war history and great outdoors, rafting, biking, etc.
Burlington, VT. again, downtown and outdoors. Close to Montreal and that's worth the trip up as well.

I guess I need to go back to Boston at some point- the time I went I just didn't really enjoy it.
I do agree with the NYC and San Fran recs- but it just depends on the type of vacation someone wants be it excitement or calm respite.

it really depends on how long you have. A lot of good stuff around the country, but a lot of spots I am good after a day or so.

New York, New York, is everything they say
And no place that I'd rather be
Where else can you do a half a million things
All at a quarter to three
LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty pretty girls
All dressed so scantily
DC, San Antone and the Liberty Town, Boston and Baton Rouge
Tulsa, Austin, Oklahoma City, Seattle, San Francisco, too
Everywhere there's music, real live music, bands with a million styles
But It's still that some old rock and roll music
That really, really drives 'em wild

You think you got friends, you think you got buddies like DownSouthJukin. You think you got bandmates, but no... its always the same. They leave you hanging, or kick you off the bus at Paducah- McCraken Co Kentucky fairgrounds at 2am on a rainy Sunday morning.
It's all good. Last time I post lyrics !
( Dont kid yourself about the lyrics deal )

if i had to pick iconic places that every american should "try" to see, in order:
NYC
DC
Chicago
Flagstaff/Grand Canyon
San Francisco
Boston
NOLA
Denver area
Yellowstone or Mt. Rushmore
Vegas
Seattle
DFW
Anchorage
San Antonio
San Diego
Atlanta
Philadelphia
Orlando/Miami
just like my opinion man. not saying those are the end all be all, but i feel like if you hit all of those, you've got most of Americana covered. there's nothing in the midwest i want to see. sorry.

Maybe it’s because I live in DC now, but it fricking sucks. I can’t wait to get out.
