To SC fans, historically what has kept you behind Clemson...

I'm not intending this as a flame. Just wondering what you see as the reason. In general, most state universities out do the other universities in football. I think California would be an exception as they are well behind UCLA historically. DIdn't check, but I assume they are behind USC as well. Florida owns the overall record vs. FSU. UGA over Tech, Bama over Auburn. Tennessee over Vandy, Ole Miss over MSU. Texas over A&M. Arizona over Arizona State.
No matter how bad your team was, you always seem to have huge fan support, which is admirable. So I would assume the dollars were there. How did they end up getting the edge so often?

Their willingness to do anything and everything possible to win - legal or otherwise. The rivalry was pretty close until the Pell - Ford days that ended with them having so many major violations the NCAA had to develop the death penalty rule. The ends justified the means, and they've gotten better at covering their tracks.

Im guessing with CU being so close to Georgia, they can get more players from the state with the best HS players than USC can.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I always figured they just historically had better head coaches than South Carolina.
Clemson had John Heisman, Frank Howard, and Danny Ford.

This has to be it, right? Spurrier won five in a row over Clemson until their GOAT finally got them rolling at playoff-level performances. Clemson seems to have gotten luckier in that regard and/or cared about being better at football for a long period of time.

Clemson got a taste of success in the late '40's -'50's, and when Pell and Ford brought it back, I believe fans and administration saw that it was possible to do well, and began to see Clemson as a football school. Struggling against traditional powers in ACC basketball plays in that vision as well.
South Carolina, other than briefly under Morrison and Spurrier, has never experienced success. If they begin to run their football program like they do their baseball, though, they might. They sent Holbrook packing pretty quickly, and they're making enormous facility improvements.
They need to quit accepting mediocrity.

Being a football independent from 1971 to 1991 destroyed our program. I'm glad we bolted from those NC bastards in the ACC but there's no doubt that's where it all began. The rivalry was pretty even until the mid-1970's. I was born in 1985 and, before the beginning of our 5-game win streak in 2009, we had, in my lifetime, only beaten Clemson in 1987, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2001 and 2006.

The fan support is die hard on both ends, but Clemson's big boosters mean business. Ours are there for the cocktail parties and the influence. Clemson boosters ran Ken Hatfield off in 1993 after he went 32-13-1 in 4 seasons. You'd get a statue in Columbia for that same record.

Why is Alabama historically so much better than Auburn? Combine rabid fan bases with hall of fame coaches.
Clemson also has had a very active booster club for a long time (IPTAY - which started as I Pay Ten a Year in the 1930s). My perception is Clemson has historically had a lot of small donors, which makes lots of people feel invested in the program. It's a beautiful campus that is close to metro Atlanta, North Carolina and Tennessee.

NC schools controlled the conference and treated both SC and Clemson like we were redneck stepchildren. I mean they expected us both to play home basketball games against UNC and Duke in Charlotte. And because of the large amount of talent in SC, the NC schools conspired to raise academic standards to keep our talent out of the ACC. At the same time, the ACC created an exceptions committee stacked with members of the Big 4 schools, which became a way for NC recruits who didn't qualify to get approval and ours to be denied. Clemson and SC allegedly had a gentleman's agreement to leave together, but their BOT shot it down.
