I'm a huge LSU fan and my best friend is a huge Ole Miss fan. We used to always talk about how elusive Matt Jones was. He didn't look fast but he was really fast. He didn't look all that shifty but he was very shifty.
We always said that he owned a grease factory. He was just that slippery. LSU's win over Arkansas in 2001 that helped us make it to the SEC championship game for the first time was a great game and a massive nailbiter because of Matt Jones. Tigers pulled it out but just barely. I was so glad when Matt Jones finally graduated.

I loved watching Arkansas during the Jones/Cedric Cobb years. Also during the McFadden/jones/Hillis years.
Fun teams

Dude was drafted in the fricking first round outside of his original position, can't recall a time that's ever happened in the draft. Was a startling player to watch against LSU because of the constant threat he presented with his athleticism but thankfully we shut his arse down TWICE his final seasons at Arky. His final game was glorious with how we obliterated them up in Little Rock and Randall outJonesed Jones.

Arkansas was lucky to have Jones for 12 years right after the 12-year tenure of Clint Stoerner.

Matt Jones was a lot of fun to watch. He was a threat to score a TD on every play. It was like watching Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds knowing they could launch one any time. Those players suck when they're on a team you play.

Coke destroyed his career in the nfl

I interviewed him in 2004 along with Charlie Bennett from the Charleston Post & Courrier and Rick Scoppe from the Greenville News the week of their game here.
Ah, that explains it. Matt hated the press. I mean he really, really disliked talking to the press. When the sports editor for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette tried to interview him once Matt turned around, dropped his pants, and just stood there to let the guy interview his butt.
He loathed talking to anyone with a microphone.
Oddly enough he was a nice guy away from that. I had a couple of classes with him when I went back to school to get my second degree and he was so laid back he was damn near comatose. Smart though. His big goals in college was to A. play basketball and B. graduate and go on to become a teacher.
The NFL ranked well behind deer season and probably behind pick up a 12 pack of beer for the weekend. A tremendous natural athlete, possibly the best to ever play for Arkansas, but he disliked football. And hated the press. He'd have been happier playing basketball and maybe being a walk on for the Razorbacks in football.
I hope he didn't make you guys interview his butt.

You know, Gus has his share of detractors on here, and I've said a few things about him myself. But if Gus had been calling the plays for the years that Matt Jones was the QB for Arkansas I think Jones wins a Heisman and Arkansas wins the SEC.
Matt had speed to burn, he was tough enough to take big hits, and he could throw the ball decently. Malzahn would have put him in position to exploit those skills better then Nutt. Nutt was willing, a few times a game, to run that lethal shotgun option with Jones but he just couldn't get away from his old school the QB hands off the ball and does play action passes approach.

I was there for all of his career but I forgot how big he was for the speed and cutting ability he had.

Been in a line with Matt once or twice.

Sad!! He was a great athlete. To say the end of his career was, caught in the back of a friends SUV chopping up coke with a footlocker credit card.

One of the biggest wastes of talent of all time. If only he could have put down the doobie...

He single handily made Arkansas my second favorite SEC team. He was unstoppable on NCAA football.
