I believe it to be more of a Boone County thing. My friends who went to Mizzou in the 80's who were not scholar athletes told me about Boone County police and sheriff's department.
For years Charlie "Tuna" Edwards and Onion Horton have been preaching do not send black or white athletes there.

the police here do suck. But I dont think that interferes
with recruiting.

That’s such a STL thing. Something may have happened about 40 years ago so the old timers are using that to influence 18 YO to go somewhere else.

I remember when Onion Horton, the late Morris Henderson and Charlie Tuna(Tuna has since cooled out on that) back in the 70's and 80's tried to get kids and especially black kids not to go to Mizzou, because they wouldn't recruit any far east of St. Louis County in St. Louis back then.
The higher uppers at Mizzou had to force Onofrio to recruit the PHL in the city and the eastside and kids still ended up there. Kevin Potter, Demetrius Johnson, Steve Hamilton, Wendell(Sting) Ray(Shane Ray's dad) came from the PHL while Johnny Poe, Eric Wright and Kellen Winslow came from East St. Louis.
Today, colleges and especially Illinois are using race and Mizzou offering St. Louis kids late as a weapon against Mizzou. That's just the dirty business of recruiting. Plus Mizzou doesn't have the most loyal fan base(attendence) and the acceptance of mediocrity.
Just keeping it real!

Sheldon Richardson never committed to So. Cal. He committed to Mizzou; then did not have the grades. He went to JUCO in CA; then transferred to Mizzou. He did visit USC once while in JUCO before re-committing to Mizzou.

He verbally committed to So. Cal. from JUCO and decommitted and then committed to Mizzou.

We will see what kind of game these "big time" players have when they play a 7A squad from Georgia the last weekend in August. These guys were on the same team that got pushed around in the second half of a losing effort to Lamar, a team with no rated players on it.

That song is still sung in the high schools of St. Louis. Until the Terrance Curry's and Howard Richards of the Missouri world can get the word out that it is over blown and happens at every college campus it will still be sung.

You don't know what you are talking about, because the main 2 guys that were fighting against inner city kids going to Mizzou back in the mid 70's to mid 80's had legitimate reasons are either deceased or not in commission anymore. Back then they use to show Mizzou game on tape delay on Saturday nights and then again on Sunday mornings in St. Louis.

majic: what were the issues that made the 2 guys discourage inner city kids from attending Mizzou?

What were those legitimate reasons?

Isn't not attending games how one traditionally shows he's not willing to accept mediocrity?

"Typical Mizzou overreaction.
Coaches don’t really influence recruiting. It’s the schools and their reputation that really drive recruiting."
Not true.
Schools and rep are important, but coaches certainly can make an influence.

It’s really an between. There’s a cap on how well Mizzou can recruit regardless of the coach. That’s probably around classes consistently ranked in the 20’s.
No matter the coach Mizzou will routinely recruit behind Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida, A&M and Tennessee.

The late Onion Horton and Morris Henderson started the protest with kids in the inner city of St. Louis and E. St. Louis, because Mizzou wouldn't put any emphasis on those areas where stud players wanted to come and play for Mizzou. I played back in that era and got to know Onion and Morris. I really don't think that their plea to players not to go to Mizzou really worked.
After that somebody at Mizzou forced coach Onofrio to recruit those areas and they got commitments from db Demetrius Johnson, de Steve Hamilton, de Wendell Ray(pops of Shane Ray), db Kevin Potter, db Eric Wright, db Johnny Poe, and Hall of famer te Kellen Winslow.
Charlie Tuna was one that tried to get kids to not go to Mizzou, but has changed his stance over the years. Demetrius Johnson has always loved Mizzou and tried to help recruit kids there until recently when He had a falling out with Pinkel over the protest. He doesn't try to get kids not to go there and he doesn't push them on going there, either.

So Horton's problem with Mizzou was that he was offended by a song that they had long ago changed the lyrics to making it not offensive.
That is fricktarded and not a legit reason.

Did you hear the lyrics to the fight song that was still being used in the 70's and 80's? Did you not read anything else, but only picked out the fight song?
Believe me, it was legit back then. I went to Mizzou back in that era and there's a whole lot more to this. I only brought this up, because I was asked and now I'm moving on from this. I will say that I have and will be a Mizzou fan, but they have had and have some issues. I'm sure other universities do too, but Mizzou is our concern.

So you sat in the stands and heard people singing about darkies and pickininnies? bullshite. The NAACP would have had a field day with that. That isn't what his qoute says either. It says the original version used in minstrel shows, not the version used at MU sporting events and sung by Johnny Cash.
I was also unaware that Quin Snyder took over the men's basketball team in 1996. It was quite the well-written article.
What a clown show.

I apologize for my ignorance of your coaching staff, but who covers the KC Metro area for your team as far as recruiting goes?
