I’ll be leaving the Marine Corps in April after five years and LSU did not attempt to work with me since my high school grades weren’t the best and I didn’t have enough transfer credits to meet the requirements. Maybe I just talked to the wrong person but it didn’t work out. Tennessee has been exceptional during this entire process and honestly just wanted to share my excitement with others. I’ll be starting in the fall. 23 year old freshman!
Also I really need to charge my phone

Congrats! What're you planning on studying? You'll love Knoxville and UT.

Happy for you. You're getting here just in time to use all of the new student union facilities, new dorms going in, and the exploding downtown area. You'll love East TN and Knoxville. I will never leave.

Currently set on criminal justice but will probably end up doing business

Congrats my man. You moving up to Knoxville?

If I were you I would say screw the criminal justice route and just go straight to the business school, lots of big companies out there that hire through UT that have plenty of well paying jobs they love filling with ex military. Just do supply chain management, accounting or finance and have a 3.0 or better gpa and you will make a lot of money right after school. All the ex-military perfect ole I went through the business school with are kicking arse now in the real world.

I had several military guys pledge my fraternity after Desert Storm. Excellent guys who all did very well. Best of luck to you, and congratulations.

Congrats. You'll have to realize we don't serve crayons for breakfast, lunch and dinner though.
There is a small ANG base with a small exchange just down the road near the airport. There are a lot of former Marines in that unit too if that's something you want to pursue. Lots more education benefits to be had there if you're a member of the TN national guard. Pm me for details if you wish. I'm AD and stationed there, retire this year w/26 yrs.
Welcome to East Tennessee!
Edited for spelling. Can't let a Marine correct my AF grammar.

I have an active subscription to Crayola for that reason, I'll be alright. Not sure what other education benefits I could receive since tuition will be 100% paid for and i'll be getting a 1300 dollar housing stipend every month.

Also can someone recommend some of the better places to live off campus? How are the commons? My price range is anywhere from 500-900 per room

The Woodlands area behind UT medical center is decent, but you're driving to and from campus if you're out there. There's a lot of new apartments going in on the strip/Cumberland avenue as well that's central to everything. I personally lived in Vol Hall and it's technically on-campus but it doesn't feel like it. Used to be a hotel that they converted into apartments. Being close to the strip gets you easy access to campus and all of the bars, etc. I loved my time there, it's a special place. Links below to some of the newer apartments and vol Hall

Craigslist can be a pretty solid resource. If you have friends to room with you can easily find an apartment in the fort that wouldn't be too pricey. When I was in school I lived in houses around the fort, but I was trying to live off like $500/month. I imagine you'd be able to get a 1 br apartment in the fort for 700-900.
I currently live in N Knox near 4th and Gill, it's walking distance to a lot of bars/breweries and Old City. I love it but it'd be driving distance to campus.
