Any Concern About Tosh Being Named DC ?

Tosh has never called plays before. Seems a little concerning to let someone with zero experience calling plays call the defense.
Maybe coach is giving him this shot because Bama couldn't afford to lose him to another school willing to give him the opportunity.
Obviously we had to retain him with the heat being turned up so much on the recruiting trail so I'm not sure CNS had any choice but to roll the dice, but I will say this -
Going from Pruitt who I think was the best DC in the entire country for years, and called multiple championship seasons at DC, to Lupoi who has never called a game doesn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies.
Kirby at least called plays at Valdosta State.
Pete Golding called plays at UTSA.
Also usually the play caller coaches the ILB's so I'm a bit confused why Golding has been assigned the ILB's if he is not going to be the play caller.
Anyhow, I suppose Bama is fortunate that they will field their best offense of the Saban era this season.
Will be very interesting to see how Tosh handles the heat, and I hope he learned as much as he could from Pruitt. Pruitt > Kirby IMO BTW
Going off topic for a moment I wonder with todays technology if there is a simulator for calling plays ?
Exactly like what exist for young pilots a simulator could help young coordinators gain experience without having to learn with dire consequences.
The coach would have a simulator that looks exactly like the sideline, and he is seeing the opposing offense line up in real time, and has to call plays exactly like a real game. You could run the coaches through the simulator, and grade them accordingly, and help them fix mistakes before they happen. I bet CNS could dial up some tricky shite for a coach to handle in a simulator.

With the help of a simulator Tosh could call ten years worth of plays before spring ball starts. I'm sure he'd love that especially with CNS doing all the grading.

My only concern is that did waiting to name him DC affect our chances at landing certain recruits this past cycle

Will be growing pains for sure. Especially with a completely new secondary. But I think Tosh will find his groove and Alabama will be damn good on defense as usual.

Maybe we can make it through this juggernaut with a young DC.

Nope. I trust Saban's judgement on him, and if he needs mentoring he has the GOAT

Well if we didn't have the greatest coach in history I might be worried about it.

Golding is an insurance policy. If tosh struggles, Golding has a ton of playcalling experience

I don't have any concern at all really. If Saban trusts him I do. I usually hate that answer too. My reasoning is that Saban has an elite defensive mind on steroids and I don't think he would trust his defense with a guy he felt wouldn't be up to the task.

It's Saban's defensive system and Tosh should know it quite well by now. I'm not concerned about it.

Some of you forget that it wasn't that long ago that Saban hired Pruitt from Hoover High. He was then in an office position for years and finally made it on the field as a secondary coach. His 1st shot as a DC/play-caller was at FSU and he has been really good in that role from day 1. Tosh is a smart guy, connects will with players and has had plenty of time to learn our system, and watch how Smart and Pruitt called the defense. I suspect that he'll be more than fine.

I dont think he would either unless... unless he knew he couldn't afford to lose yet another critical recruiter, and other teams were trying to steal Tosh away with offering him the DC role at their program.
Zero experience calling plays to calling plays at Bama is a bit of a brow riser, but if anyone was going to be given that opportunity I'm glad its Tosh.
I keep hearing nothing but good things about Golding. I'm glad he's already in the pipe for when someone offers Tosh his shot at being a HC.

So no one thinks it would be a good idea to put coordinators through simulations to work on their play-calling ?
Could already exist for all I know, but if not it seems like it would be an invaluable tool to get young coordinators dialed in.
I'm surprised you never hear of grades for coordinators. Especially with all the analytics, stats, rankings, etc. the NFL uses.

He has way more experience than Kirby when he was named DC in 2008.

Much more concerned about Locksley at OC tbh. We have the potential to have our best offense ever, and we've got a dud as an OC smh
