‘My Heisman shot’: Alabama RB signee stays loud and proud about lofty goal (al.com)

quote:

Alabama running back signee and early enrollee Trey Sanders isn’t backing away from his Early Signing Day proclamation that he wants to win the Heisman Trophy. Sanders, the nation's No. 1-ranked running back prospect from IMG Academy (Fla.), doubled down on the Heisman talk during an interview at the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii.

"This is my Heisman shot, I ain't going to lie to you," Sanders said in an interview with MaxPreps' Myckena Guerrero and shared on Twitter. "This is my Heisman shot. As soon as I leave here, man, I'm probably going to cut off social media and I'm probably going to just focus on getting that Heisman."

Sanders is one of several Alabama signees in Hawaii this week for the Polynesian Bowl. Others include quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and defensive back Demarcco Hellams.

Sanders is the only running back among Alabama’s 24 signees from college football early signing period, although 4-star Keilan Robinson is committed to Alabama but did not sign in December.

The graduation of Damien Harris and back-up Josh Jacobs' decision to enter the NFL Draft gives Sanders a strong shot at earning early playing for the Crimson Tide. But winning the Heisman as a freshman? That's a lofty goal, especially considering no true freshman has ever won the award.

At Alabama, Sanders also must battle junior Najee Harris, another 5-star prospect who was also the nation’s No. 1-ranked and Brian Robinson, who was also a national top-10 running in high school at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, for playing time.

Of course, Alabama has regularly used multiple running backs during Nick Saban's tenure. Last season, for instance, three different running backs logged more than 100 carries but none of the three surpassed 150 carries.

Sanders ran 68 times for a team-best 470 yards and five touchdowns last season for IMG Academy (7-1), while splitting carries with Penn State signee Noah Cain. He also caught 13 passes for 191 yards and four touchdowns.

"This high school stuff, everything I did in high school, it's great, but in college, there's something bigger coming," he said.

Alfano reuniting with coach at Alabama
(BOL | embedded video)
quote:

It's all coming full circle for 5-star defensive lineman Antonio Alfano.

The Alabama enrollee is reuniting with Kyle Flood -- the coach that gave him his very first offer during his stint as head coach at Rutgers -- in Tuscaloosa as BamaOnLine's Travis Reier reported on Friday that Flood is expected to join the Crimson Tide staff, likely to take over as offensive line coach.

Antonio Alfano @Antonioalfano99
Excited to reconnect with Coach Flood at Bama. He was the 1st coach to offer me a scholarship when I was in 8th grade! #RollTide

And while the Colonia (N.J.) native is going to contribute to Alabama on the Tide's defensive front, there's no question it's an added bonus for Alfano to have a familiar face with him at Alabama.

Flood is most recently coming off a stint coaching the Atlanta Falcons' offensive line for the past two seasons. Prior to his time in the NFL, Flood was the head coach of the Scarlett Knights from 2012-15, helping the program win its first-ever Big East Championship in 2012.

Alfano didn't have Rutgers among his finalists when he committed to Alabama last May over Georgia and Penn State, but when it comes to recruiting there's always something to be said about that first offer.

The 5-star defensive end is coming off an incredible showing in San Antonio at the All-American Bowl to cap off his high school career. This past season, Alfano wreaked havoc on both the offensive and defensive lines for Colonia. Alfano tallied 76 tackles including 28 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, six forced fumbles and three pass breakups. On the offensive side of the ball, Alfano racked up 42 pancake blocks.

Nick Saban and staff coveted the nation's No. 7 overall player, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings, early in the process, and it was ultimately Saban's approach that won out for Alfano's signature.

“He told me what it was,” Alfano said of the difference between Saban and other head coaches. “He told me this is what they expect of me and what they do here. Other coaches were like glitz and glamour, we have this here, we have that here, we can do this for you, we can do that for you … Coach Saban really wasn’t like that. He was like this is what we do here and this is what we expect of you here. That’s how I like it.”

Alfano enrolled at Alabama on Jan. 6 and has a prime opportunity to compete for early playing time along the Tide's defensive front his freshman season.

That had to have absolutely killed Trussville to let Saban land a helicopter on that field. They are so over-protective of that thing.

Muschamp is right. These star systems are highly based on your offer list, as well as camp performances, and multiple camp performances at that.

There are huge swaths of great players who aren't huge campers. Also, all it takes is for some decent name schools, but who also have idiot coaches at that time, to offer a kid and he gets a bunch of stars. Just because Mark Helfrich's Oregon and John L. Smith's Arkansas offer a kid, doesn't make him a truly deserving of more stars. But that's exactly what happens. Those staffs didn't know piss.

Point being, it's a system who's fundamental basis is flawed and only evaluates a fraction of the country. It's also a for-profit business, and guess who's fanbases generate more clicks?

If a player attends a camp for Nick Saban and receives a committable offer then that is all we need to know. The fatboyz with laptops from the pay sites opinion mean nothing to me.

The fact is, a five star is much more likely to one day play in the NFL than a four, who is much more likely than a three, etc. Take 30 or 40 minutes one day and see for yourselves. Stars do matter.

I don't believe Nick and his staff are asking Rusty Mansell or Andrew Bone how they rate players that have actually practice before him.

No, but it's not a coincidence that 5 stars are also so much more likely to be NFL caliber players. The most talented can get noticed, it's players who are a step down or not developmentally ready by the time high school ends who get missed like JJ watt.

I'm sure they dont. I'm simply saying stars correlate significantly to the NFL draft.

There are only 20-30 five stars. How many rated players are there ? Thousands? Probably 20 to 30% of five stars eventually go in the first two rounds. Probably less than 1% of three stars do.

I always get bashed for star gazing. Some 3 stars are underrated, some develop into NFL talent but id rather have five 5 stars the ten 3 stars. Look at the statistics
