With the season complete, here is a look at the all-time wins list.
1. Michigan 943
2. Notre Dame 906**
3. Ohio State 898
3. Texas 898
5. Nebraska 893
6. Alabama 891
7. Oklahoma 884
8. Penn State 878
9. Southern Cal 834
10. Tennessee 833
A few observations:
Alabama will catch Nebraska and Texas pretty soon. Alabama has also caught and surpassed Oklahoma in the last four years.
Notre Dame has 30 or so wins under NCAA scrutiny. It is still under appeal, but they will more than likely lose them.
At the current rate, Alabama should be in third place in the next few years. Ohio State will be tough to catch. Too bad those 21 wins from the textbook scandal were taken away. And the additional 8 wins in 1993.

Meh, I dont care about asterisks in a book. As far as I'm concerned we're at 920 which is #2 all time and just 23 behind off #1 which we will slowly chip away at year by year.

It is funny that no website that keeps tabs on records has taken off Notre Dame's wins, at least temporarily, while their case is on appeal. As soon as Alabama was levied with the penalties from the textbook scandal, the 21 wins were removed from everything.

I believe it should be 921. Bama had to forfeit 9 wins in 93 & vacate 21 wins 2005, 06, 07.

Right. For the truth, you have to add the 31 games won on the field that some suit in an ncaa office decided we should forfeit because Antonio Langham signed a napkin in the celebratory aftermath of the national title game, or vacate because some kids sold some textbooks.
Meanwhile, at about the same time we were slammed for the Antonio signing that napkin, Auburn had to give up some tv games, back when a team was on tv about 3 times a year, because coaches were providing players with incentives.
NCAA penalties were, and remain totally arbitrary. There is no rhyme, reason, or rational justification for how they mete out sanctions.

NCAA has screwed us here, and every team ahead of us started playing years before we did in 1892, except for Tejas.
Most also played easier schedules than we did due to league affiliations, especially ND as an independent.
UM - 1879 (played 43 games before we even had a team)
ND - 1887
OSU - 1890
TX - 1893
Neb - 1890

Michigan with 943 and almost nothing to show for it

It still pisses me off we had to vacate wins in 2005 due to textbooks, yet Oklahoma's starting QB that year was paid $18,000 by a booster for working at his dealership even though he only worked 5 hours a week and they got their wins back.

One of those was a bowl win, and it took a ten win season away from us as well.

One thing to factor in, they have played many more games than Bama. Some of those schools were playing football long before we did. Not really concerned with the old old records. I like looking at the last 10-15 years, most do not remember much past that. And to be honest teams 20-25 yrs ago really have no bearing on the schools today. Those team like to remember the late 1800's and first half of the 1900's as they were power houses then, not anymore. I mean really when was last time anyone feared ND or Mich

There's only a handful of years difference when most of the bluebood programs began playing. Michigan is the only one that is the outlier.

Obviously the recent past is more relevant, but it wasn't that long ago people would have put Alabama in Nebraska, Notre Dame, or Michigan's shoes.

True to that, but who really keeps up with 50 yr old wins? It is nice to know your history but it is just that ancient history. The past few years are all I really look at. I mean the old wins were with different staffs, rules and payers who are in nursing homes now. I celebrate the old guys and what they did but it really is not that important to me. The best thing is right here right now, those who live in history do so as they have nothing else to celebrate. I am sure Mich, ND and Neb., love the past they actually won games back then. But today they are all pretty much irrelevant.

I don't think it's irrelevant. A strong tradition is easier to build on than a base without that.
The Bryant Museum, even, offers a tangible thing with which recruits can and do relate. In this super competitive college football world any advantage, to whatever degree it may be, is good.
Personally, I think the relevant tradition more or less starts with the era when Alabama and the SEC integrated. Before that time, many of the best players in the nation and even our own state couldn't play at Alabama. Hell, a few years before that they couldn't even attend SEC schools. Nevermind that, as I'm tending off toward a rant.
Anyway, tradition is relevant. Not so much as how many players are in the NFL right now, or how many highlights were on ESPN this year, or 5 titles in 9 years, but still, it is relevant.

222 wins came between 1869-1918.
Since 1918, Alabama has 780 wins. Michigan has 721.

Incorrect.
Our on field record in 1993 was 9-3-1. Our official record is 1-12 (the only "official" win coming in the Gator Bowl against North Carolina). We forfeited eight wins and the tie against Tennessee.

Bama has 921 wins, only a handful behind a team with 20 or so more seasons than we have. Bama's win percentage is the best of anyone.

Prideful ignorance is embarrassing. So is being proud of having recency bias. In terms of sports, it's usually a quick way to spot fairweather fans
