The other concerning pattern with hiring NFL assistants, is that because a pro gig is easier (no recruiting) and pays well, these guys seem to always jump at the 1st chance to get back into the NFL. Which creates the staff turnover cycle that's killed us the last 2-3 years. Coaches that are ingrained in the college game seem to stick around longer and not leave until they can move up to a higher level position which seems advantageous for continuity which is huge in recruiting as we learned this year.

I trust Saban to make the best hire, I'm just leery of NFL guys for both reasons mentioned in this thread. I'd hate to hire Travis Jones, and a year later he's off to the 1st NFL opening that would have him. And we're back at square one, and any relationships he built with recruits are out the window once more.

If I were Saban, I'd almost want to put a 3 year "minimum" clause in all assistant contracts. If they leave before 3 years, except in the case of a firing, they owe the university like 10 million or something. Make these guys stick around a little while.

WHO IS GOING TO BE THE D-LINE COACH? WHY IS THIS TAKING SO LONG? ANNOUNCE A HIRE ALREADY! IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 8 WHOLE DAYS! WE NEED SOMEONE RECRUITING NOW!

Ok, I feel better now. I am glad Coach Saban is taking his time, thoughtfully considering candidates and making a decision that is best for the program. I will wait patiently for an annoncement. I know a lot of the best decisions take time.

That would be great but Saban doesn't even have that in his contract so it would be difficult to get someone else to have it.

Saban has lots of things in his contract his assistants don't have. Like lots of zeroes at the end of his salary.

As the boss, you get to do things like that. He probably won't, but we do need to slow down staff turnover we've seen over the last 2-3 years somehow. Recruiting is built on relationships, and you can't build relationships with kids when you have a brand new staff every 10 months.

Funny, but our staff has known for months Dunbar was leaving after NSD. Insiders have even been saying this for awhile. You think it was a coincidence the Steelers literally hired him the day after NSD? Saban knowing this was coming, you'd think would have a guy ready to be announced shortly after. Not a huge deal, but we need a KILLER DL class this year and other coaching staffs and their DL coaches are out there building relationships with these guys now and recruits don't even know who their position coach at Bama will be.

That was more about my impatience then anything else. I doubt not knowing who the DLine coach is for a week or two is going to turn off any recruits especially if it is a great hire. We are going to have a new Dline coach who is going to have to establish/reestablish relationships regardless. I'm sure Tosh and Golding are in contact with the appropriate recruits. Also I think Saban has been pretty busy so I understand the delay even though I wanted to see a hire yesterday. It will be fine, but I still want it to be over with.

Maybe Saban didn't want to draw attention to Dunbar leaving until after NSD. Maybe he was real busy recruiting and making other hires. Maybe he's also having to navigating the NFL coaching carousel. It's still early in the 2019 recruiting cycle. Taking a few weeks to make the best hire won't hurt recruiting; it'll help it a lot.

Per an insider, Saban's made a key adjustment (going forward) -- build good relationships with each recruit besides just the primary recruiter, including Saban.

Coaching rumors: Travis Jones a candidate to become Alabama’s defensive line coach
LINK
quote:

Travis Jones reportedly is a candidate to become Alabama’s defensive line coach. On Thursday, AL.com’s Matt Zenitz reported that Jones, who worked as the Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach from 2013-16 and then as a senior defensive assistant for the team in 2017, is expected to interview soon for the position with the Crimson Tide. Jones and the Seahawks parted ways in January. Before his time in the Pacific Northwest, Jones had experience working under Nick Saban during stints at LSU (2003-04) and with the Miami Dolphins (2005-07). Jones also was the New Orleans Saints assistant defensive line coach from 2008 to 2012. Saban is looking to replace Karl Dunbar, who was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. Alabama is coming off a victory against Georgia in the National Championship Game in January. The result marked the Crimson Tide’s fifth national title under Saban.

I was making a jab at the slow and lazy reporter. The 2nd sentence of that article: "On Thursday, AL.com’s Matt Zenitz reported..." It's a day-late rehash of yesterday's news-breaking al.com article (posted itt) with no additional info.
