Travis Jones would be a huge hire.

quote:seems like a guy who would do a runner the first sniff of another NFL job though. Also, has not been in college for years and doesn't have the recruit relationships. Might be nice to get a guy that was already in on the players we need to land next year and who would like to stick around for a while
Travis Jones would be a huge hire.

Report: Former Seahawks DL coach a candidate for Alabama opening (BamaOnLine)

Another name has reportedly emerged as a candidate for Alabama’s defensive line coach vacancy.
According to a report from AL.com, former Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach Travis Jones is another name to watch in the Crimson Tide’s search for a replacement for Karl Dunbar. And the former NFL assistant is expected to interview “at some point soon.”
Jones is currently unemployed after he and the Seahawks mutually agreed to part ways late last month. He was Seattle’s defensive line coach from 2013-16 and served as a senior defensive assistant this past season.
His previous stint before the Pacific Northwest was an assistant defensive line coach with the New Orleans Saints (2008-12). Prior to that, Jones worked under Nick Saban at both Miami (2005-07) and LSU (2003-04).
He was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tigers after stops at Kansas (2001-02) and Appalachian State (1998-2000).
Several names are emerging for the position in Tuscaloosa. BamaOnLine reported Wednesday that Tulane defensive line coach Kevin Peoples and Kentucky defensive line coach Derrick LeBlanc are also candidates, with Peoples having already interviewed.
Los Angeles Chargers assistant Eric Henderson and Ole Miss defensive line coach Freddie Roach are also names to watch in the coming days as Saban looks to complete his staff.

Biography
Hired on February 13, 2013, Jones joined then-defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s staff after spending five seasons as assistant defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints. He began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins from 2005-07, where he and Quinn were on the same defensive staff. Named to his current position on March 16, 2017.
In 2016, Cliff Avril set a career-high with 11.5 sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career, while linemate Michael Bennett made the Pro Bowl for the second-consecutive season. Second-year end Frank Clark also recorded double-digit sacks (career-high 10.0) helping the Seahawks rank third in the NFL with 42.0 sacks.
In 2015, Seattle ranked first in rushing defense allowing a franchise-record low 1,304 yards for the second-consecutive season (81.5 ypg), while Bennett set a career-high with 10.0 sacks.
On its way to Super Bowl XLIX, Seattle’s line aided the no. 1-ranked defense by ranking third overall in rushing defense allowing only 81.5 ypg. The unit also ranked second in the NFL in opponent rushing yards per attempt (3.4), despite the loss of stalwart Brandon Mebane midseason.
Jones’ Super Bowl XLVIII-winning defensive line was one of the deepest positions on the squad in 2013. Veterans Red Bryant, Chris Clemons and Mebane were joined by free agent additions Avril, Bennett and Tony McDaniel to improve Seattle’s pass rush, always a priority in Pete Carroll’s defense. Seattle ranked tied for eighth in the NFL with 44.0 sacks, the most in Carroll’s four seasons as coach, as Bennett led the team with 8.5 sacks.
In 2009 with the Saints, defensive end Will Smith enjoyed his finest season as he ranked fifth in the NFL with 13.0 sacks, while the trio of Sedrick Ellis, Anthony Hargrove and Remi Ayodele provided a solid pass rush on the interior line that played an important role in its Super Bowl XLIV victory over Indianapolis.
Prior to arriving in New Orleans, Jones spent three seasons with the Miami Dolphins, his first year as assistant defensive line coach and his final two seasons tutoring the outside linebackers and defensive ends. During his Dolphins tenure, the line recorded 92.0 sacks. Defensive end Jason Taylor was selected to the Pro Bowl each year and was named the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. The Dolphins ranked second in the league in sacks in 2005 and third in 2006.
He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Georgia, in 1997 as a graduate assistant/defensive line before moving on to Appalachian State (1998-00), Kansas (2001-02) and LSU (2003-04), where he was the defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator for the Tigers.
At LSU, Jones coached a defensive front that featured defensive tackle Chad Lavalais, a consensus All-American, finalist for the Nagurski and Lombardi Awards and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Following the 2003 BCS National Championship season, Lavalais and defensive end Marquise Hill were both selected in the NFL Draft. Defensive End Marcus Spears was also named All-SEC in 2003, a consensus All-American in 2004 and a first-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2005.
Jones was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs (1990-92, 94) as a defensive lineman and served as team captain as a senior, playing one season with the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL in 1995 following graduation. He earned his master’s degree in 1998.
Born on June 6, 1972 in Irwinton, Ga., for the last 11 years Jones has held a football camp for youngsters in central Georgia that teaches the fundamentals of football, sportsmanship and the importance of goal-setting to serve them on and off the field.
Jones and his wife, Melody, have three children, Kennedi, Averi and Mason.

After the last few coaches we got from the NFL sucked balls at recruiting, I’d be ok staying away from NFL guys. Just need to go ahead and hire somebody so they can hit the recruiting trail and start building relationships. Seems like this hire is taking a little too long IMO. Get an ace recruiter in here and turn him loose.

A DL coach with NFL experience and a background including recruiting coordinator could be lethal.
Posted on 2/15/18 at 8:40 pm to CapstoneGrad06
As long as he still has that fire in his belly to recruit. A lot of these cats that are in the NFL for a long time get fat and lazy and don’t want to do anything but coach. That’s lethal at the college level where recruiting is the lifeblood of your program.

Only thing about this guy that's different than some of the other NFL hires, saban has already had this guy on his staff before as dline coach, so he knows if he can recruit or not

Well, he was recruiting coordinator at LSU when Saban was there, so he was darn good at it at one point, anyway.
I remember Chad Lavalais at LSU (whom Jones coached). Seems like he single-handedly destroyed our offense the year they beat us something like 27-3.

That 2003 LSU defensive line had converted TEs and a former prison guard making Oklahoma its bitch in the Sugar Bowl.

If he does have it and really does want this job (commits to least a few seasons), Travis Jones seems like the best fit and most likely hire, imo.

The common theme is Louisiana and Georgia ties. Travis Jones and Kevin Peoples seem to
be the favorites.
