Is Dabo a good coach or is he like Gus Malzhan?

Anyone else considering the fact that he got lucky with a once in a generation player in Watson like Gus did with Cam?
I wanted Dabo to be the future coach of Bama, I really did. But he may just be a slightly better Gus. Time will tell. I could see Clemson winning the ACC next year but will the offense improve? I just hope Saban has a coach lined up for when he retires. His legacy depends on it.

It took Watson to finally get over the hump, but Clemson has been consistently good the last several years.

I mean, they both won their conference without their 'once in a generation' player.

He was back in the playoff without that player so....
Also, your "or is he like" coach was 1 game from the playoff as well.

Dabo is obviously an excellent coach and recruiter. The jury is still out on Gus. Malzahn has an innovative offense but he really needs a dual-threat QB for it to be most effective.

Dabo is a snake oil salesman. He lucked into winning the ACC in 2016 because of a mistake by the refs, letting them snap the ball with 0 on the clock against UNC in a very competitive game.
They're paying players up there with dirty money from NewSpring church. Dabo is a Pharisee of the worst kind. Take it to the bank.

Newspring church? Do you have a link? I'm interested

Don't forget about that once in a generation CB he had playing QB

Maybe DW was lightning in a bottle like Cam was at AU. I do not think Dabo has a QB who can do what DW did and 2018 will just be more of the same.

Dabo is as good of a recruiter as there is. He is also smart enough to surround himself with some of the best coordinators money can buy (Morris, Venables and now Scott) and not get in their way. His antics and cliches make him come off as a cornball, but Clemson is recruiting on the same level as UGA and Alabama. I don’t think he leaves Clemson though.

Clemson has been pretty good before and after Watson. They needed Watson to get over the championship hump but he still has them light years better than before he arrived.

is clemsoning a thing again?

No thoughts or comments on the Newspring thing.
But if there is money changing hands to steer recruits to Clemson, there are a whole lotta other programs in the Southeast (and elsewhere) doing the same thing.
Come on. This is all over the place.
As for Dabo? I neither dislike nor like him. Which come to think of it, is my attitude towards Clemson.
But what he does works. He closes the deal with recruits, relentlessly pushes the brand (Clemson), grabs the mike from sideline reporters (he ain't a shy interview), and cheerfully does things that sap the energy of most wiz-kid coordinators promoted to head coach.
And those things are actually the most important things head coaches do now.
As long as he has strong coordinators (and he's shown he is ruthless about showing guys who can't get it done the door), he will continue to be successful.
The players are there for them. South Carolina (we aren't Louisiana, Georgia, or Florida, but we do put them out), good access to Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida, etc.
What he has going will continue till he runs out of steam, or they get the wrong coordinator when some guy moves on (like Venables to K-State, which I expect to happen in the next year or so), then are too stubborn to replace him.
And he's making beaucoup money, his family seems happy enough. He'd be a fool to leave that, even if "Mama" called.
Only thing I see stopping them from staying where they are is if "The message goes stale." This may sound wonky, but it happens all the time. Seems like there is a 10 year thing, then it starts to slide.
Dabo hasn't shown any signs of it though. If anything he is starting to look like a long-haul coach, like Osborne or Snyder, able to stay at one job for decades and be consistently good.

Gus has been a P5 head coach for 5 years. He has more 4+ loss seasons in that time than Dabo has in his head coaching entire career (9 1/2 years).
In a nutshell, you're an idiot Larry but that's not really breaking news.

Didnt Gus win the SEC and go to the national title game with a defensive back for a QB?

Clemson is one of the winningest programs in the game right now and is recruiting at elite levels.
He's a good coach.

I was going to say this too. Seems like we have a generational player every year

Clemson lost 75% of their Offense from last year and made it back to the Playoffs...
And what has Gus done except soak Auburn for more money?

Dabo's win percentage for his first 6 years is almost identical to Gus' win percentage.
