That one has two more in 1964...
1964 Georgia 19, Clemson 7
1964 Tulane 0, Miami-FL 21
And then the two Alabama vs. Ole Miss games from 1980 & 1981 were not counted as conference games. What a fricking mess.

I don't know about that but they still won the SEC 1972 because they played an extra game over Auburn (who beat them in the infamous Punt Bama Punt game). Looks like it was either Kentucky or Vanderbilt.
yeah, I found the same link and was about to post it - right under the "appointed games" it talks about the 2 AL vs Miss games that never counted as conference games
Bama always used to play one more SEC game than everybody & I knew that it helped them get a championship one year, but did not realize that it came at the expense of a team they had lost to...
and I was wrong about NC State - correct about Clemson & S Carolina...

That's a silly rule the SEC had at the time. Prior to the 1980 season, the SEC ruled if two SEC teams scheduled each another independently, and not through the conference office, the game would not count in SEC standings.

doesn't AL have a bunch of years when they played an extra game that did not count as a conference game?
Yes, several Bama-Ole Miss games weren't counted as conference games.

there were a few years when games against straight up OOC opponents counted as conference games (maybe even a few Auburn vs Clemson or UNC games?) to compensate for losing the GA Tech game?
Years ago, schedules were finalized like 5 years in advance. When Ga Tech and Tulane withdrew within a couple of seasons of each other, years worth of SEC schedules got screwed. Teams had to "designate" conference games from the mid-to-late 1960s.

I think I like this book since it has us with 11 SEC titles.
Oh. So you're a UF fan!
FWIW, I still think it's bullshite that Tennessee gets to claim an SEC title for 1990, but somehow LSU doesn't get to claim an SEC title for 1984.

so, basically, official conference records will always be off by a few games when compared to the head to head records
also interesting that Tulane games still counted as conference games & GA Tech games did not
must have to do with the bad blood when Tech left
something else I remember; seems that GA Tech almost came back into the conference at one point, but Ole Miss black balled them (UGA wanted them back in) - GA Tech used to refuse to schedule the MS schools because they felt they weren't worthy (based on academics) - that snobbery wound up costing them the chance to re-join the league IIRC

The SEC said we could still win the conference during the 84 season if we took our medicine and didn't appeal to play in the Sugar Bowl. Then they went back on their word in the spring of 85 (thanks to Dooley) and voted 6-3 to vacate it.

There was some serious bad blood between Bryant and Dodd, especially after the infamous 1961 game when an Bama player basically broke a GT player's face.

Dooley also kept Clemson out of the SEC
when Free Shoes chickened out in 1991; Clemson was a clear favorite to get the Seminoles spot, but Dooley would not allow it
you should consider that a draw...

Yep. It still seems weird that it should matter whether the title was taken from UF before the season or after the season, for the purposes of counting LSU versus Tennessee.

Or maybe it's just what happens when you give teams a choice in how they designate their conference games. Nobody wants to have an independent game against one of the best teams in the country count as a conference game.
Then again, after some good years as an independent from 1964-66, GT kinda sucked from 1967-69.

brain fart - I know you're a Gator; for some reason I was thinking SC
fwiw - I think that should count as a championship for y'all

It's kind of interesting, because it was known before the season even began that UF was facing like 100 counts worth of violations. It's odd that UF was even eligible to win the 1984 title.

It was early in the season (Pell was fired after our third game). They should've said right then and there that we weren't eligible to win the SEC instead of being okay with it (since we didn't appeal and force our way into the Sugar Bowl) only to take it away later on. It rustles the shite out of me and I wasn't even alive then.

Should be noted that Auburn has played more big 6 schools that any other of the big 6 and it's not close.
Perhaps you do not realize that some of the league's best teams in its early years (1930s through '50s) are not the same as the league's current powers. Auburn didn't play strong Ole Miss and Vanderbilt clubs for years (also didn't play Bama or LSU for long stretches as well). Auburn also played Florida in those years when the Gators were not very good.

After 83 years Bama still hasn't been called for holding.

We have a .500 against Vandy specifically because a good portion of our games against them took place in the 30s through the 50s when they were good. We played the gators yearly from the formation of the SEC until 2002, and played Bama, Tenn, GA, and Florida yearly from 1956-1991. Trying to downplay how tough our schedule has been throughout SEC history is just silly.

2 strong years and A&M could be 4th.
