Perhaps we are, but I think we were justified in thinking he wasn't the right option. 2015 was unacceptable. 2016 had some TERRIBLE moments but we at least put on a nice show through the middle of our schedule.

This season had the LSU embarrassment, but there's no denying that we beat the shite out of Georgia and Alabama and most likely, one of those two schools will be the national champion.

One big ray of light was the play calling and game planning for Amen Corner and the SECCG. I liked us throwing the ball more. Ryan Davis turned into a superstar. I never felt like we were isolated in our game plan or that we were trying to be too cute too often. Hopefully having Stidham for a second year and all of the receivers coming back (plus a healthy, hungry Pettway, please?) will lead to more big time offensive performances. Add in a ferocious defense, and we should at least challenge for the West next year. That's all I can ask for as an Auburn fan.

I think we'd be foolish not to acknowledge the change in attitude that Gus had after Jacobs announced his departure. I think comfortable Gus will produce at a higher level.

Like it or not, if we are paying that much money the expectations become geared towards bringing home hardware.

7-6 for seven million a year just is not acceptable without a darn good reason.

True. This and the fact he is still learning are legit points. I just hope he actually learns.

I was looking for the article I read on coaches contracts a few years ago, but can't find it.

From what I remember.........there is a cap on what a University can pay a HC from their pockets. It was in the high 200K to mid 300K range, IIRC. The other money comes out of endorsement money paid to that program/donations from boosters. The money Auburn University pays has not changed from the last contract. Gus will just be getting a bigger cut of the other part of the pie.

That's huge. He's a young coach, all things considered. He has a chance to turn into a monster. He's shown he can adapt. He essentially changed his entire coaching philosophy after the LSU game and we absolutely demolished two #1's in 3 weeks. I think we made the right call.

Well, Hell, if boosters want to pay, more power to them.

I think Ross has a point though, pay increases only serve to up the pressure.

Pressure is one thing, meddling is another. I hope we somehow gave him more control. Our boosters sound like they can be real issues. Combine that with Jay's incompetence and interference and you have a huge problem to overcome as a FB coach.

Yeah. If you look at what saban makes...

LINK

If you go to Page 7 on that pdf link........bama is paying saban $245K per year. I am sure that is exactly what Auburn pays Gus.

2013 - sec champions and within a missed tackle of a national championship. One of the biggest turnarounds in college football history.

2014 - we were in the playoff hunt in November (#3 in CFP rankings) until we choked against tamu and layed an egg against UGA. Not saying it’s ok, just saying we were in control of our own destiny in November.

2015 - JJ pretty much ruined this season. Gotta put some blame on Gus for not seeing it coming for sure, but JJ was truly a headcase.

2016 - again, we were in the playoff hunt in November until we crapped the bed against UGA. Let me remind you our QB was broken and we were Pettway-less in that game.

2017 - again, we were in the playoff hunt in November. We beat #1 UGA and #1 bama and simply couldn’t finish in the SECCG. We were also missing key players on both sides of the ball in that game.

So there you have it... 4/5 seasons we have had a chance to make the playoff/championship game with Gus at the helm. That’s pretty incredible. As mentioned above, he is still a young coach and I believe he has to figure out how to *finish* a season. And I think he has turned the corner this year.

Pay the man.

1-3 in bowl games. Sub .500 record vs our biggest rivals: Bama, Georgia, LSU.

Wording in the article has now changed. It says the deal is expected be for 7 years and include a raise, but doesn’t give a number for what that’ll be.

Rant post says $7.4 million per year.

He had us by the balls. Let's hope he got a glimpse of what it's like to be a champion and won't get complacent with the money.

Last time he got a big deal, he bought some flashy BMW and showed it off to recruits.
