we let sexton pick up the ball too far up the court
i would have liked to see flagg pick up sexton instead of gilder because IMO gilders injury has hurt him as a defensive player
i dont know why starks decided he needed to defend the three point shot
i dont know why flagg didnt step up into the lane once his man cleared out

Let’s say you have Gilder try to deny him the ball. Sexton still gets it on the run as their play was designed with two guys screening for him around the foul line. Now Gilder is even more out of position.
He beat Gilder around the corner, neither Williams or Flagg came up to help near the rim as they should have, he made the shot. Ball game.

The last 4 seconds says it all about Kennedy as a coach. That _efense was inexcusable, doubly so after a timeout.
Normally I'd be heartbroken by such a loss, but Kennedy and this team have conditioned me to expect poor basketball IQ, poor execution, poor shot selwction, poor ball handling ...
And it never sure have come to this. Those 4 consecutive turnovels killed us, especially the Starks assist that gave them an open dunk.
Pathetic, downright pathetic.

why is gilder the only one playing defense?
Posted on 3/8/18 at 2:49 pm to Uncle Gunnysack
Do you mean playing defense or guarding Sexton?
Posted on 3/8/18 at 3:17 pm to Projectpat
Kinda the same right? I don’t know Starks was doing out there? It wasn’t playing defense

Sit down and let me learn ya sumthin'
First, that is a scenario where you NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER dedicated a defender to deny the inbound. Denying the inbound is beneficial when the ball is under their hoop or there is so little time you expect a long heave down the court. With almost 5 seconds left you force the other team to essentially play 4 on 5 because you know they will be pushing the ball with either the guy bringing it up taking the shot, a quick back door cut or a kick out to the wing. That's the most fundamental flaw with BK's "plan".
Second as SOON as he crosses half court you double Sexton. Starks should have immediately cut him off and forced him to pass. Starks had clearly been instructed to guard the wing, but what should have happened is we should have had an extra defender back there allowing us to double Sexton with three on three behind it. At that point there's only time for a pass and a shot.
Almost every other team in America in that situation forces a contested three after the double forces Sexton to pass or a horrible heave by Sexton himself. It's basic defensive basketball fundamentals.

Roger is young but that seems like a fundamentally sound plan.

Pat makes it sound like Bama had some unique master plan when they did what literally every team with a star ball handler has ever done in that situation.
Generally coast to coast buckets only happen when teams don't call a TO. It almost never happens out of a TO because it's not hard to prevent if you scheme against it.

Let's compare the 2017-2018 team that went .500 in conference with other .500 in conference Aggie teams that this team is way more talented than since Gillispie:
2004-2005: 23-10, 8-8 in conference, 0-1 in conference tournament, 2-1 in NIT
2007-2008: 27-11, 8-8 in conference, 2-1 in conference tournament, 1-1 in NCAA Tournament
2017-2018: 20-12, 9-9 in conference, 0-1 in conference tournament, TBD postseason

2017-2018: 20-12, 9-9 in conference, 0-1 in conference tournament, TBD postseason

i remember boston college allowing it to happen against us back in 2010 or 2011. only difference was, dash harris missed the layup.

That sounds great, captain hindsight. Only problem is when we do that and he dishes to the wing who drains his open shot for the win, you’re all melting about how we just fell for their trap by doubling their star player and gave them the game.
If Gilder is able to cut him off better and/or Williams and Flagg come up to help since there was no time left to dump off once Sexton gets to the free throw line, we force a worse shot.

To add on, having one defender on the inbounder and having 3 players feign an inbounds denial attempt and then immediately get back on defense, it limited their number of potential shooters to two or three while only putting us down one defender. If we don’t do that, they have four available shooters, maybe even five with the inbounder trailing.

that hypothetical was better than any defense BK drew up
Posted on 3/8/18 at 9:07 pm to Projectpat
I didn’t watch the game or highlights but screw BK and this team. Such a waste of talent

Like I thought, no refutation, just whining. Keep being you, Aggy.

You've won me over with "your great refutes." A&M played perfect defense. Forget what every announcer, every sports host and every fan has said. Only you speak the truth. Kennedy is a basketball god. Wooden, Smith, Knight and Coach K could all learn a thing or two from Kennedy's genius.

And you keep being you, I guess.
