*****The following comments have nothing to do with performance, just observations or thoughts based on our personnel and how played vs. Fresno State and Florida State*****

* Clear that Raekwon Davis was either serving a bit of a "light suspension" vs. Florida State - or perhaps we just overused D Hand because we knew what we'd get from him as opposed to Buggs/Davis/Williams.

*Joshua Frazier's PT went back towards 2016 levels after he had a much bigger role vs. Florida State. Will be something to monitor in upcoming games

*Pay no real mind to gross snaps at LB vs. Fresno State as we too Shaun Dion Hamilton out of the game much earlier that usual on account of the score - but technically it was still 1st team out there sans him and maybe 1-2 others.

*With Evans out, we rotated Holcombe & Wilson every other series and seemed to usually let the one that hadn't been playing that series - come in at Mike on 3rd down Dime situations (a role that SDH has not played this year but probably would if he hadn't torn his ACL so late last year)

*It was almost 50/50 Jamey Mosley & Chris Allen at OLB since we didn't have A Jennings or R Evans (on 3rd downs). My assumption there is they are just going to watch tape these next few games and see which one (or perhaps both) we can count on to spell Jennings when he's back.

*Still early but barring further injuries - expect Dylan Moses to be simply a 3rd & long Dime pass rusher this year.

*At DB - it was interesting late in the 3rd Qtr we went back to the Nickel package we finished up last year with (sans Wallace for Humphrey) as Tony Brown got to play Star in Nickel and Fitzpatrick went to S with Hootie hitting the bench.

*Very likely nothing to it based on past year but odd how X. McKinney came in at S before Deionte Thompson did vs Fresno State.

---

On offense - for the first time I can ever recall we had 4 WR's on the field at the same time 9 different times (I think ONLY on 1st downs). There wasn't a TE. It was Ridley and the 3 freshman all 9 times, as well. I do not recall us ever having 4 WR's on the field at the same time under Saban - at least not that many times in "non Hail Mary situations assuming we've ever done a hail mary type play)

*Jedrick Wills spelled Matt Womack at RT for 2 full series in the 2nd quarter. Tells me that competition is close but perhaps not. No clue. Also, even though #13 was playing QB with #22 Harris at RB and the freshman at WR - for one series Josh Casher spelled Lester Cotton at RG with the other 4 starting OL's still in with the 1's.

It would be dumb, IMO, to overthink or look too much into our personnel vs Fresno State overall, but some interesting groupings we used.

I feel like Nussmeier did this a good bit. But I'd have to go back and look. Kiffin definitely preferred more TE looks, even if he never used Howard as much as he should have been.

Yes he did and he drove their stud defensive player (#9), 20 yards downfield.

That #9 for Fresno was a damn good LB. Him and Bo had a collision at one point and Bo fell backwards like he hit a brick wall.

Looks like Nigel Knott didn't play, that isnt a good sign considering him and Diggs will be on the only true corners Bama has coming back next year.

Averett is the exception rather than the rule but played less than like 6 snaps his first 3 years before last year so early to rule out Knott.

Having said that, yes looking ahead to next year the Secondary is a MAJOR concern and only a fool would argue otherwise. But I wouldn't rule out Jared Mayden at RCB just yet - he won't play any this year in meaningful spots (God-willing) but I can see him being ready next year. Then you have Shy Carter who can, if nothing else, help us at Star.

Between:

Diggs
Mayden
Carter
Thompson
McKinney
McDonald
1-2 Incoming Freshmen
Knott
etc
we should be fine in terms of finding a Top 5-6, but depth will 100% be an issue but that's the case for most programs. Yeah though secondary for 2018 doesn't look great right now but let's not think about that, say we? HA

One of the plays was the 3rd & 3 on our second drive. I thought it was an odd personal grouping for a 3rd & 3. I assume it was to disguise the designed qb run.

I might be out of the loop on this. What has happened to Ben Davis?

I have no inside information, but CrimsonBoz and others have indicated it just hasn't completely clicked for him yet. Someone made a comparison to Jerrell Harris -- looks great, but plays a little slow or soft right now.

That actually doesn't bother me; Harris became a very good OLB by his senior year.

Anyone know what's up with Dylan Moses? He hasn't been seen during the media viewing part of practice all week.
