I don't think the concern is about the number of kicks; it's having all your eggs in one basket when it comes to the kicking game.
If you've got one kicker handling punts, kickoffs, extra points and field goals, and that kicker gets hurt on any of those plays -- your entire special teams aspect of the game just took a massive hit.

Amazing how AU reloads at that position.
We've really only had 2 good/great kickers (Parkey/Carlson) + 1 solid before that (Wes Bryum)
I think the key has been they all get a RS year + Not put in high pressure situations too early

Still trying to figure out why we didn't give multiple Dodge Chargers to Carlson's little brother.
Don't know if that would have worked. The older Carlson didn't go pro just for the chance to play w his younger brother. They've never been on the same team before
Plus there is the whole slap in the face from not offering Daniel Carlson. I've heard that really rubbed them the wrong way. Parents did athletics at Bama, grandpa is a major Bama booster

That was one of the biggest mistakes Saban and Co. have made...ever. Can you imagine Bama with Cyborg kicking FG's?

We fans would breathe a lot easier, but going into this season assuming he made every FG Griff missed during the time their college careers overlapped the sum difference would been at most the 2014 Ole Miss game.

Not totally his fault, but Griff was the kicker on the last play of the 2013 Auburn game.

But Carlson was not in school yet. He is a year behind Griff so he wouldn't have been an option in 2013.
And also yeah, a true freshman being a little short on a 59 yard attempt isn't that unexpected.

Our kicking situation is so bad that if we need a 42 yard fg to go into OT, we're fricked. We might as well throw a hail mary

I'd trust JK for it but that's about it at this point pap and bul would not be able too. JK can kick a mile sometimes he gets it wide though.

JK is a key player though. I'd rather not have a reliable FG kicker and minimize his chance for injury, tbh.
If Eddie didn't take on an extra role last year then we almost certainly win the Clemson game.

It happens, I know, but injuries to kickers and punters are rare. I wouldn't sweat it if one has to do everything.

I'd be more worried that JK will spend time trying to improve his FG kicking and neglect his punting and both will suffer. Let's face it, I love JK but punting is his thing, kicking ain't. He's a serviceable place kicker, but he's not turning any heads. I'm worried he'll ruin his punting mojo.

Saban confirmed today talking to the rec the two veterans will split. Unless bul is visited by Jesus in the next two weeks.

Griff could kill it in games when nothing was on the line and/or Bama had a big lead...not so much in big games.
bullshite. His FG from 55 yards on the last play of the first half against LSU in 2015 broke a 10-10 tie and was a turning point in the game, and the 5 FGs at Auburn the same year...including from 40, 47, and 50...were huge.

Agree...plus the game tying FG in 2014 at Death Valley; wasn't long but there was lots on the line. There was also the game tying FG in the first CFPCG right before the most clutch kick in his career, that onside kick. The degree of difficulty of placing that kick in that spot was calculated by a sports science agency as less than 3%...not to mention the pressure on him at that moment. We lose that game without that kick...
