for real man. surely someone on the damned soccer team (rec or not) has a cannon of a leg and has kicked before.
kickers are like closers in baseball though. if you can build confidence (and mental toughness) and the talent is there, they're great. if you can't build confidence, all the talent in the world doesn't matter.
As we have seen, our kickers become quite the mental case.

no doubt. and it's easy to get frustrated with them, but with kickers you've got to build the confidence up a little at a time. take more makeable kicks in practice. let them see the ball go through uprights a ton. gradually back them up based on leg strength and accuracy. and, until both you and them have confidence, don't let them attempt anything in a game they can't make 80% of the time in practice.
just from a guy who has seen his fair share of kickers (and closers), that's the approach I'd use

Can we have tryouts for the general school population on the quad?
Hell, I'll even volunteer to round up the errant tries, if it means we can find one reliable human who is enrolled at UA?
Certainly there is at least one middle Eastern engineering student who is a whiz at soccer and dominated his hometowns soccer league.

Jesus fricking Christ we are snake-bitten at this position. God knows if we get a top 5 kicking recruit, we'll get the one that completely unravels and turns completely worthless while the other 4 go onto break records

Griff made 69.5% of his kicks in his Alabama carreer.
Less than 70% isn't great for a big time college kicker but it sounds like we'd take that this year.

Bowling fricking Green can recruit a kicker better than we can.. WTF!
I'll repeat it: Damn you, Eddie Piniero!
Of all the high school teams in Alabama, we can't find one dude that can consistently make it from 40 in? frick the long stuff, just 40 and in. If we get to the opponent's 25, I want a good chance to come away with points.

There really has to be some flaw in Saban's handling of kickers. Just has to be. Whatever mental preparations of "continue to improve" , "focus on the process", etc. mantra he preaches to all of his players must not translate to kickers too well.
Maybe he ought to set them aside and tell them to do whatever they want, just show up here on Saturday afternoons ready to kick.

Scott's form was all wrong at A-Day.
I completely disagree, actually. I've watched the Aday game several times, and I believe Scott looked good and smooth both kicking off and kicking FGs. He's just tall.
Scott was 3/4 on FGs, and his miss was close. And he was booming kickoffs. If he ends up being the guy, I'm fine with it.
Y'all need to relax. Bama has been really blessed kicker-wise for a lot of our history, including much of Saban's tenure, and you guys act like Tuscaloosa is kicker purgatory.

"About as well as Griff" is a pretty danged high standard to meet.
I concur. Of all Bama kickers since since Bear with more than 10 attempts, Griffith has the 6th highest career FG percentage.

He had a pretty bad sophomore season (63%) that pulled down the career number. His junior (72%) and senior (75%) numbers aren't going to win any Lou Groza awards but they're solid mid-pack. I posted all Bama's kickers since Bryant a while back and even with the bad soph year, Griff's career numbers were 6th best out of 17 Bama kickers with at least 10 attempts. His career percentage is even better than Van Tiffin's.
The kick-6 and bad season to follow simply branded him for life in the minds of many Bama fans. I'd obviously LOVE to have had Daniel Carlson instead, but over the last couple of seasons Griff was more than serviceable.

Maybe it'll work out that the Ole Miss kid is automatic from inside 35 and we just go for it outside of that.
I'd be 100% fine with that strategy.

We just need another Jeremy Shelley type guy who is (almost) automatic from 42 yards and in.
If Bulovas has to attempt a long one I'm cool with it as long as we cover the kick.

Griff wasn't terrible by any stretch. It's just that he wasn't awesome either. When's the last time we had an All-American kicker? Why can't we sign one? Why don't we just go after whoever AU recruits every year? It just doesn't make any sense that the clear #1 football program in American can't sign one elite kicker in a decade. That's just freakin' nuts. This is Saban's one great failure so far as a coach.

He does have a cannon...dunno 'bout accuracy though...if the MaxPreps site with his stats is correct, he didn't appear to be very accurate in high school...

He also kicks it low to the ground.

I love that someone downvoted your post - which consisted of one single absolute, easily verifiable fact.

Fair questions. The only reason I always post in these is that so many people act like Griff was terrible. He wasn't. He just also wasn't Daniel Carlson.

I think the point is that when you have THE best cfb program in the nation, you should have one of the best kickers - not some mediocre guy or worse. We've had good punters, but we can't even get a top 50 kicker

AL.com just confirmed the numbers I saw from MaxPrep:
Bulovas comes from Mandeville, La., where he was 68-for-76 on extra points and 11-for-25 kicking field goals with a long of 52.
