How much influence do past games/trends have on this season?

This sort of thinking comes up frequently in threads about upcoming games: "You haven't beaten us on the road since 1999", or "Your HC has never beaten our HC", or "We always win at home in our series, and your team always wins at your place, so it's our turn to win this year", and so on.
While there is something to be said for history, how much do previous games or trends actually affect the outcome of an upcoming contest between the same two schools?
a) A lot
b) Some
c) Not much
d) Almost none
I tend to think "d". What say you, Rantards?

Florida, USCe, and Tennessee havent beat us in years.
Whenever we lose to them, the recent trend will have no effect on that game.

I would tend to say D, but I feel like some of that shite just gets stuck in the heads of our players and coaches.

I believe that programs can just have a mental edge over another based off trends/past results.
For example since the 90's Florida just has UGA's number. Even in our best years they either beat us or give us a scare. No matter how bad they are this happens.
Another example would be UGA over Auburn, so I can see why you wouldn't want to believe in the existence of a mental edge.

I would probably go with C in most cases. There are so many factors involved to really apply one of those choices to every situation.

Since 1962, UGa had a record of 24-2 at home versus Vandy going into last season, and had won 46 of their last 52 contests with the 'Dores. Why didn't your "mental edge" make the difference in that game?

You're probably right except the monkey on the shoulders is self inflicted. Winning against UGA has become unnecessarily too much of an obstacle only because we never put the monkey down, which allows the monkey to grow into something it should've never been. Gus has yet to call a good Georgia game.

Only in relatively rare cases when a streak is exceptional and very highly publicized. It can start to weigh on a team.
Even then, the streak usually exists because one team is consistently better. When that flips, so does the series.

I could be wrong, but I think Bama has beaten us something like six times in a row? Haven't heard much about it though

I didn't say the mental edge was the ultimate trump card. It merely helps a lot. Obviously UGA has beaten Florida and Auburn has beaten UGA in those time frames.

It definitely helped. Gus is a head case and doesn't know how to call a UGA game. We took away the run and forced White to throw with his BB gun arm. Georgia players expect to win tDSOR every year.

It's mind numbing how even the shitty UGA teams can defeat Gus.
New Gus therapy though:

quote:If by 'took away the run' you mean you were able to stop our beat up 2nd string RB (starter missed the entire game) and and by 'BB gun arm' you mean 'injured' then I totally concur. Which only goes to prove my contention, the outcome is almost completely dependent upon actual gametime factors, including injuries, and not "mental edges" based on historical trends.

Won't argue about Gustav screwing up with the playcalling/personnel decisions, just as he had the previous year in Jordan-Hare (fortunately he seems to have addressed that in the offseason, although that remains to be seen).
But to somehow attribute any part of your 2016 tDSOR win to Richt's success against us in previous seasons stretches credulity IMHO.

C
These are kids. They can absolutely be impacted by what they've previously participated in. That immense pressure from their fellow students and fan base to buck the trend is usually counterproductive. "Here we go again" when something goes wrong can snowball in a hurry

examples:
Florida had streaks against 2 teams last season. The trend would be for them both to continue. UF-UK continued...UF-UT did not.

A lot.
LSU will lose to Bama but still beat Aggy, so streak at 7 for the respective teams.
Aggy will still beat Arkansas.
Tennessee and Arkansas and Mississippi State will be blown out by Bama.
Auburn, the away team, will continue the tradition of the road team winning in the series with Texas A&M.

Still took away the run from an Auburn offense predicated on it. Plus the 2nd stringer was a good RB in his own right.
Also White is not a prolific thrower already, but yes the injury hurt those results too.

I guess I'm just one of those fans who takes mental edge as a vital part of the game. While I know a host of other factors are involved I just know personally the mental edge is something I would want on my side as a player.

I think it depends. If the teams are fairly even, then breaks can tip the difference from year to year.
If one team really dominates the other, then it is usually a physical and mental edge there.
In State's case, OM was 22-2-3 against State from 1947-73. That mental edge carried over for another 15 years or so. Now it is completely gone.
Bama won 36 out of 38 against us from 1958-1995. Obviously they have a big edge on us. Now from 1996-2007 we had some success against them 6-6. However since 2008 they have beaten us every year.
LSU is something like 25-5 against us since 1985. Some maybe mental but a number of those games especially through the 90's, State was the better team but lost the game.
OTOH, we had beaten UK seven straight before last year and I think it was mental with them.
So I think it depends on the teams involved and each situation can be different.
