Simple question, or do you leave it on?
I havent really worn a hat in years, but always took it off, especially while eating a meal at a table. My dad wouldnt allow me to do it, so I have kind of taken the same thought process.
Thoughts on people who do or dont?
This photo made me think of it and a family, last night, at dinner, 4 of the guys all had hats on.

I only wear a hat when I need to. Not for fashion.

What self respecting Southerner or man leaves their hat on inside?
Hell who wears a hat eating unless in a car or at a game?

Yes I do. But I am also not a cowboy and maybe they have different rules.

I did find this online regarding cowboy hats.
Any time you enter a building, the hat should come off.
If it is an informal occasion you may put it back on but for a formal occasion it should stay off.
When sitting down at a table for a meal, the hat should come off unless there is nowhere to safely lay the hat.
When sitting down at a counter for a meal, the hat can stay on.
Out on the range however, keep your hat on while you eat. If you take your hat off, another wrangler might step on it or spill food into the rim.
Full disclosure: When I was a cavalryman I did in fact wear my stetson indoors at times. As was the fashion of the times.

Rarely ever wear hats but it just feels wrong to eat at a table with one on so I always take it off

On the rare occasinos I wear a hat, it comes off when I go inside or when I sit down to eat. To do otherwise is piss poor manners and unacceptable.

What pisses me off the most is when guys wear hats to church, I mean come on.

As for hats, it is a shame the fedora has been replaced by the baseball cap. Pretty sad to be at a funeral recently and a guy who should know better was in baseball cap and tennis shoes with a suit.

Social conventions have changed radically over the past 40-50 years in the U.S. There are no hard and fast customs anymore. The sexual revolution, political polarization and the decline of religion have turned the mores and manners of the 1950s on their heads.

Who downvoted me? If it was for wearing my stetson inside in the Army I will meet you at the local Sonic at 1pm Central.

I care far less about the garb and accessories than the way people treat each other.

Well they can be related.
Working on set for period films it has been noticed many times that the dressier the attire, the better the manners of the extras on set. In a day or two you see men's manners improve greatly and the women's language gets a bit less salty.

Well if we go with the Joe Cocker line of thought.

Slightly NSFW (not the full version from the movie)

I've been working with the public for over twenty years and have witnessed people that are dressed how most deem appropriate be the rudest, foul mannered folk you could image. Over the course of days staying at one of our hotels this not change. I've seen people whos attire is frowned upon be the most well mannered, respectful and pleasant.
