This professor analyzes the value of programs based on what they would be worth if sold as a pro franchise. I think you have to register with the Wall Street Journal to get the full list.

Not sure how UNC's valuation could fall that much from 2015 to 2016

ETA 222M to 143M. There's a bizarre amount of fluctuation in general.

Kentucky is the nation’s most valuable college basketball program with a valuation of $342.6 million, surpassing Louisville at $320.1 million. The Cards held the top spot every year since 2011, but could not combat the Cats’ $98.3 million surge over the last year.

UNC wins it this year, they're #1.

That damn Tar Heel logo and baby blue are very marketable. Helps to have THE Jumpman pumping your school too. Imagine his face wearing UNC colors on the TV all over the world if they win.

ETA:

If I had to pick one as an investment in a theoretical world. Cats have help with their ridiculous recruiting though.

The value as a pro franchise wouldn't be any where close to that because pro sports wouldn't let them clearly cheat . They get the best players money can buy every year but don't have much to show for or , so I don't see how they have such a good valu.

There is no telling how dominate Kentucky would be if NCAA basketball had the same rule as football to keep player in college 3 years after high school.

With players leaving freshman and sophomore year they have to rely strictly on great recruiting and very young players. I would love to see this program with junior star players.
