went to Charleston a couple summers back. It was humid. I was with the now in-laws who don't party. Myself and my future bro in-law proceeded to sneakily hammer flights of Jack once everyone went to bed. Good times.
Also, had terrible terrible TERRIBLE chafing. Much baby powder was applied. God it was so humid.

Spent two years at Camp Lejeune. Proud of my service but you won't find anywhere more humid than Jacksonville short of a a rainforest.

I still maintain the belief that BBQ places are better in the rural areas, but I really hope he does well in Charleston.
This is the correct answer. Downtown has some good barbecue at three or four locations now though. All off shoots of single joints that became successful and opened locations downtown and charge more for the same product that in one case is only ten minutes away.
ETA: vinegar based is the bomb imho. Also, if the sauce is on the meat when you order...leave immediately and tell them why.

It's definitely true in NC that rural areas are much better for barbecue. The top BBQ counties in NC are Davidson, Pitt, Rowan, Wayne, and Forsyth and only Forsyth has a city of any size in it.

I am a pork BBQ connoisseur and, though it grieves me, I must agree with the Tarhole above.
Particularly towards the coast where vinegar and tomato have been combined to form the base. Wish I could remember the one about 15 miles outside of Chapel Hill, headed back to Charlotte. Best I have ever had.

I've been to some good joints in North Carolina in Lexington and a few other towns but whenever I'm remotely close to Dudley I haul arse to Grady's! That is how it's done.
Edit: back to SC...when you're close to Holly Hill, go to sweatman's. Good BBQ.

But we are on an LSU site, gonna use LSU slang.

I grew up in the small town of Johnsonville (Florence County) and one unique thing about the town is that it is where General Francis Marion accepted his commission. Also, he had a camp on Snow's Island which is bordered by Lynches and the Great Pee Dee River. Anyways, South Carolina is full of history and no matter where you go in the State, you will find out more about it.

The vinegar/ketchup sauce is common in Lexington and other western Piedmont towns. In the east, it's vinegar with no ketchup. They also typically cook whole hogs in the east, while Lexington style is just shoulders. The place you went was probably Hursey's though it could've been Allen and Son which is closer to Chapel Hill. Allen is more eastern style, though they only use shoulders and Hursey's is a hybrid of the two styles. Both places are in the top tier of NC BBQ joints, along with the aforementioned Grady's.

My South Carolina experience consisted of sand fleas eating me alive while at boot camp at Paris Island a few years back.
Loved it and hated it at the same time

Moved to Columbia,SC in 2000 when I was in the second grade. I lived there until I graduated high school.
It's a great place to live and raise kids. The Blue Ridge mountains are beautiful and Charleston is an awesome city. I grew up around ALOT of Carolina and Clemson fans, so it's pretty cool to see them doing so well.

Probably Allen & Sons?
As a pork BBQ connoisseur myself, I have been known to smuggle a bottle of hot mustard sauce back to NC..it gets a bad rap but I don't mind It for a change of pace. I'm a vinegar guy usually.

I'm headed to Johnsonville tomorrow for a meeting, actually. It'll be my first time headed there.
As far as BBQ goes, I enjoy a wide variety of sauces but Western NC BBQ is hands down my favorite. Lexington BBQ and Green River in Saluda are two of my favorite joints.

I hate that nasty-arse Jim and Nicks has a location on King, and tourists flock to it thinking that garbage is what SC BBQ is.

Anyone been to the new Lewis BBQ in Charleston yet? It's motherfricking delicious but expensive as hell. I spent $45 on lunch. 2 slices of brisket, 2 slices of smoked turkey, 2 ribs, a sausage link, and a side of corn pudding. I had a little left over to take home, but shite I was shocked when they rang me up at the register.
