Damn near impossible to argue that. Bleh until proven on the field differently and I'm not holding my breath.

a shite ton of mediocrity abounds here.
Yea, it's not good. I do think there are some guys who could end up being solid (O, Smart) and there are some guys who are pretty solid at their current spot (Stoops, Mason, Freeze until he burned the house down, perhaps Muschamp).
But Florida, Texas A&M, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee shouldn't have risks/mehs as their coaches all at once. That's a disaster.

Mullen wouldn't be in Starkville if this were true.

5. Fat Bert
He's probably not top 10. 10-22 in the SEC with only 1 winning season. 25-26 overall.

Mullen could be other places. Maybe not Southern Cal, Texas and Florida State, but he could certainly have taken jobs at "better" jobs than MSU. He has chosen not to.

Another not top 10. 7-23 in the SEC with only 1 winning season and it wasn't even a full year. 16-27 overall.

You know it's silly to hold year 1 and 2 against him. He took a talentless program built for skinny fast players and turned it into a 1970s Big Ten program.
His last 2 years he is 15-11 (8-8). That's pretty meh, but it's certainly not 10-22.
Bert, Sumlin, Malzahn and Butch are all the definition of meh, and their records the last 3 years agree with that.
Bert : 22-18 (10-14)
Sumlin : 24-15 (11-13)
Malzahn : 23-16 (11-13)
Jones : 25-14 (12-12)

If you were starting a program tomorrow and had to hire an SEC Coach not named Saban, who do you hire? My answer is Mullen. That's crazy when you think about it.

The man is 2-32 against opponents that finish a season ranked in the AP Top 25. How can any sane person rank him the 2nd best coach in the league?

That talentless program was winning 10 games a year before the let their coach go. Just because he didn't have guys for his system, he could have modified it to win (at least .500) until he could build it how he wanted to.

McElwain doesn't deserve to be in that group yet.
Malzahn is an enigma.

The 2012 team was a dumpster fire. They were awful, and they would have been at best a 6-6 or 7-5 team even with Bobby around.
Petrino's recruiting was atrocious and they were in poor shape whether he stayed or not. His genius would have won 6-8 games, but they were not anywhere close to being ready to physically continue competing in the West with the players he had.

Jones would look even worse if he wasn't in the east.

Muschamp has definitely proven he's above Butch at this point.

If McElwain was in the West he'd had the exact same records as Bert/Sumlin/Malzahn.
Malzahn and Sumlin are twins. Found lightning in a bottle in year 1, mediocre since.

The bolded portion is false, but your overall premise is correct that he is a bottom three SEC coach. Losses to inferior teams, slow starts to seasons, lack of physicality, frequent 2nd half / fourth quarter bed shittings, etc...

Again, who would you rank ahead of him?
Smart? McElwain? Sumlin? Malzahn? O? Bert?

Yup, just a random firing out of the blue, no reason whatsoever. I'll give Bert plenty of hell for now but he walked into a shitshow of epic proportions and anyone who doesn't realize that should be institutionalized or at least not allowed to reproduce.
