Has he really done much to fix that problem though? We have Ashley and who else?
Ashley, Sammons, Tega, and Troxell all have the physical potential to play tackle at a high level.

Who from the 2013-2015 classes can you say that about?

While we’re on subject, let’s mention that Prince Tega was recruited for the defensive side of the ball. He was switched to offensive line.

Ok for fun of it here's OL signed under Grimes & Hand. Just so it's easy to see & compare for everybody

2013 - JB Grimes
3* OG Devonte Danzey
3* OG Deon Mix

Danzey gave AU some valuable snaps at times but neither of these kids turned out to be much

2014 - JB Grimes
4* OG Braden Smith
3* C Xavier Dampeer

Smith is obviously the crown jewel of Grimes's recruiting. Again Dampeer gave AU some important starts but honestly OL got better when he got his face broke in 2015 if I recall

2015 - JB Grimes
4* DE Prince Tega Wanogho
4* OG Marquel Harrell
4* OG Tyler Carr
4* C Kaleb Kim
3* OT Bailey Sharp
3* OT Mike Horton

This was Grimes best class & has a shot at having four guys start next season if Kim beats out Brahms. However, Tega wasn't really recruited by him & started out on defense. But he did hit on Harrell & Horton. We will see if those other three guys can find a way onto the field next season

2016 - Herb Hand
4* DE Prince Sammons
3* OT Brodarious Hamm

Hamm was really a Grimes recruit. While Sammons was listed as a DE he was recruited to play OL by Hand. That was a late steal & got us excited about recruiting under Hand

2017 - Herb Hand
5* OT Calvin Ashley
4* OG Nick Brahms
4* OT Austin Troxell

Hand deserves credit for helping to hold onto Ashley when Maryland made a big late push. However, Ashley was really recruited by Scott Fountain so not sure can give either Grimes or Hand credit on that one. Hand deserves all the credit for Brahms & Troxell tho. On paper this looks like the strongest class but it's so early that it's hard to really give an evaluation. If both Ashley & Brahms win a starting spot this year over Grimes's guys when they are redshirt freshman, that would be a big indictment on Grimes's 2015 class

2018 - Herb Hand
4* OG Jalil Irvin
3* OT Kameron Stutts

Hand did sign a solid interior class before leaving however hadn't yet secured any tackles. Also lost the big battles for Trey Hill & Badara Traore

Grimes's last recruiting class gives me a bit of hope he can do fine at AU. But I definitely think recruiting will be a major concern under him moving forward like many on here are speculating. Hand seems to have helped reload the trenches a bit with part of his 2016, the 2017 & part of 2018 classes. I trust Grimes to get the most out of those guys but worry about what happens when we need to reload once again

Honestly, wish we could have both guys on staff with Hand leading recruiting & Grimes handling the coaching. Or you know a guy that can do both at a high level

Edit - Somehow I completely left Braden Smith off the list in 2014...

If I remember correctly, Calvin Ashley committed to us while Grimes was on staff. Hand gets credit for hanging onto him at the end though.

Correct. Fountain was his lead recruiter tho. Both guys probably deserve some credit with more probably going to Hand for hanging onto Ashley

Also little worried that only 5* OL recruited under Gus wasn't really brought in by either OL coach....

KN put up 2 recruiting insiders in past 24 hours. Here's summary of first

- Gus Malzahn & Rodney Garner attended 2019 5* C Clay Webb's wrestling match in Opelika yesterday. With Bo Nix on board, Webb is now AU's top target in 2019. KN believes it will come down to AU/BAMA

- Kodi Burns visited 4* WR JaMarr Chase this week. LSU is the major favorite but KN says Burns loves Chase & has worked hard to get him to visit. I will just say that Chase has had a wild recruitment so if he does actually make the OV anything could happen

- Keep an eye on 4* CB Taiyon Palmer. His recruitment has exploded in recent weeks landing a ton of offers including Florida, Clemson, Arkansas & Tennessee. AU hasn't offered yet but might have interest. He was the CB that shut Matthew Hill down at the Corky Kell Classic earlier this year. Former Duke commit

- KN says does not think AU will pursue former UGA commit 3* CB Rachad Wildgoose

Here's summary of 2nd one

- The snowy weather messed up some of the travel. Marcus Woodson was in Memphis but schools were closed & Tim Horton got stuck in New Orleans for a bit. Said Greg Brown & Larry Porter were the lucky ones as they were in south FL

- 3* DB Joseph Foucha still being looked at as an option at CB. He still plans on taking an OV to AU this weekend tho there is a chance AU pushes it back. Also has OVs to OM & SMU scheduled

- KN expects AU to visit 4* OT Richard Gouraige very soon. Gouraige still plans on taking an OV this weekend & AU is preparing to roll out the red carpet. He's a guy AU still plans to go after hard despite losing Herb Hand. AU expects it to be tough to overtake Clemson but believe they still have a shot

- 4* DE Caleb Tannor will take an OV to AU the question is when. Right now he's expected to visit OM this weekend & AU the next but coaching staff trying to get him to flip flop those visits

- Visit went great with 3* TE Matt Alaimo this past weekend but AU is trying to decide what to do with these last few spots. Staff was planning on visiting him today but weather might change those plans. UCLA is a team that is pushing harder for Alaimo now as well

- KN says expect AU to have a big junior day in the near future. Should give an early idea of who are top targets in next year's class

- AU will have much smaller list of visitors over final weekends. With AU having such limited spots only bringing in a limited number of players that way coaches are able to spend more time with prospects as well

Catching up on some SECCountry stuff

New Jersey tight end Matt Alaimo places Auburn at top after official visit (SECCountry)
quote:

New Jersey tight end places Auburn on top

AUBURN, Ala. — Matt Alaimo‘s first visit to Auburn lived up to expectations.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end from New Jersey took his official visit over the weekend. It was his first time on the Plains, but as it’s currently trending, it won’t be the last. Alaimo had a lot of head coach time during his official visit to Auburn. He hung out at Gus Malzahn’s house and fished — also a first — in the head coach’s back yard.

Alaimo didn’t leave with a commitment, but his decision is much closer.

“Auburn is probably at my top right now. I haven’t seen anyone else yet. I’m really impressed by it, though,” Alaimo said. “The visit was great. I really love the campus. Obviously we went to see Coach’s house. He said he likes to have his players over and stuff like that. I had never been fishing before and I went fishing in his backyard. That was pretty fun. I really liked hanging out with the players. It’s a really good family atmosphere here. That’s what I really like about it.”

Since de-committing from Pittsburgh, Alaimo picked up to major SEC offers — Auburn and Texas A&M.

Alaimo’s official visit to Auburn is already in the books. He’ll now turn his attention to the Aggies. Alaimo will visit college station this upcoming weekend. It’s the only other official visit he has set in stone for the time being, though he’s been in contact with UCLA and Oregon.

For Texas A&M, it won’t be easy to top Auburn.

“It’s [been] pretty impressive. It would take a lot [to jump] Auburn,” Alaimo said.

Auburn’s sentiment is clear: The Tigers want a pass-catching tight end in this class.

Malzahn didn’t pressure Alaimo into a decision, but he made it known Auburn’s intent to haul him in for 2018. Alaimo said Auburn coaches will come on an in-home visit Wednesday. He said Malzahn and tight ends coach Larry Porter will be the ones to make that trip.

“They pressed playing time a lot actually,” Alaimo said. “He just showed us a powerpoint of all of the players they have coming back. I would have a good shot to play early here. That’s what I really like about it here too that I probably won’t get at any other school.”

Alaimo’s commitment timeline likely won’t take him all the way to National Signing Day. After the Texas A&M visit, a decision could be in store.

“They are telling me to be patient and if it feels right make the decision,” Alaimo said. “When I feel like it’s the right time to decide I’ll probably do it.”

As of Monday morning, Alaimo told SEC Country a decision is “coming real soon.”

What Quay Walker visit change means for Auburn

Quay Walker will change the order he takes his visits.

The 4-star linebacker from Crisp County (Ga.) took an official visit to Tennessee over the weekend. He left with a new visit schedule in place. Instead of going Georgia next weekend as originally planned, he’s going back to Alabama next weekend, which will coincide with the Crimson Tide’s national championship celebration. That’s great news for Alabama and unsettling news for the rest of his suitors.

That visit change moves Georgia to the end of his schedule on Feb. 2

Auburn’s position on his schedule won’t alter. The Tigers will host Walker on Jan. 26, as always planned. And I think that perfectly describes Walker’s relationship with Auburn and its coaching staff, specifically Travis Williams. Things have often changed between Walker and other programs, but his connection to Williams and the Tigers hasn’t wavered since the beginning.

Williams is close to the family, so Auburn will be a major factor in this one until the end.

Auburn recruiting question of the day: What’s confidence level in keeping Coynis Miller? (SECCountry)
quote:

This has been a common question since Dec. 20 when Coynis Miller didn’t sign. In fact, it was addressed on Dec. 27 in a previous Auburn Recruiting Question of the Day. I suppose those are the questions I should expect when the top-ranked defensive lineman in Alabama — who was heavily recruited by the Crimson Tide — elects to not sign during the early signing period.

Rest easy, however.

Since the post on Dec. 27, not much has changed. Miller has a more set-in-stone official visit plan. He’ll go to Oregon (Jan. 19), Tennessee (Jan. 26) and Florida (Feb. 2). Just the fact that Alabama isn’t one of the programs Miller will visit should be enough to settle the Auburn fan base. All three of Miller’s visits will be to schools with new coaches, but staffs with which he had prior relationships.

Miller has the right to take those official visits. It makes sense to see what those programs have to offer under Dan Mullen, Jeremy Pruitt and Mario Cristobal — three coaches Miller knows from previous jobs.

Miller’s first official visit coming out of the dead period was to Auburn, just like his last unofficial campus visit before the dead period. He hasn’t necessarily come out publicly and said all the things that will ease the Tigers fan base, but he’s been to Auburn twice in as many weekends, as he was permitted. That alone speaks volumes to where things stand.

Miller stands by the fact that he feels just as passionately about the Tigers as when he committed on his birthday. Both of his parents were on his official visit, and it’s nothing new to note that his Auburn fan mother enjoys the opportunity to take jabs at his Alabama fan father. It’s all in good fun, and that family dynamic, at least in my opinion, lends credence to the confidence that he sticks with the Tigers.

But perhaps the most interesting interchange with Miller after his visit should give Auburn fans more confidence than any that his commitment is strong. The Tigers coaching staff is letting these visits happen (hence why Alabama won’t get an official visit). If Auburn told Miller it didn’t want him to take a visit elsewhere, he’d grant that wish.

But he’s had these conversations with Rodney Garner. Auburn feels confident enough that Miller will stay to let him enjoy a few official visits. You should, too.

Agreed but Barnes ain't happening. Hand fricked us by visiting him Monday then leaving the next day. He's eliminated us & says he probably won't visit in Feb

Tho I might swap McCreary with either Foucha or Griffin. Foucha is realistic, Griffin is the dream

Auburn recruiting: One in-state DB ‘considered’ committing, another remains hopeful for offer (SECCountry)
quote:

In-state DB ‘considered’ committing on official visit

Roger McCreary remains on commit watch.

The 3-star cornerback from Mobile, Ala., entered his official visit weekend as one of the most likely candidates to join the 2018 class. He enjoyed his visit, including a last-minute surprise meeting in Gus Malzahn’s office, something that often ends in a commitment.

It didn’t happen, but it crossed McCreary’s mind.

“I had considered it. I loved it. I was thinking about it,” he said. “I spoke to my mom, and we had a discussion to just let it play out. They didn’t try to pressure me. They understand that I love it around here, but my process came late, so I’m going to visit other schools.”

McCreary has two other official visits set up — to Alabama and Tennessee.

He’ll take an official visit to Tuscaloosa this weekend, which will coincide with a national championship parade. With Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley gone, it’s unknown at this time where McCreary stands among remaining Crimson Tide cornerback options. McCreary will go to Knoxville the following weekend, on Jan. 26.

Those two programs have yet to offer, but they’ll be behind Auburn regardless as the process comes to a close.

“Oh, Auburn stands at the top. They’re No. 1. It’s just that my recruiting process came late. That’s why I have to go to Alabama next week and Tennessee after to see how I feel. Auburn is No. 1,” he said. “I love the coaching staff and how they explained why they needed me. I loved everything they explained to me. … They just kept telling me they needed me. [Kevin Steele] was explaining how they need me and what I can bring to the team.”

McCreary spent most of his time with Steele and new defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson.

His relationship with Steele has been the integral component to his interest in Auburn. Shortly after offering, Steele went to McCreary’s school to talk to him about position fit, need at corner and how his skill set can help the Tigers.

“When he came to my school, that’s when I knew Coach Steele was the important person in my recruiting process. He explained why he really needed me. He showed me the depth chart and what I can bring to the table,” McCreary said. “With Woodson, I drove with him almost everywhere we went. We had the connection. That’s what I love about it. I have the connection with the coaches. He recruited me at Memphis. When he heard about me coming, he came and spoke to me throughout the week.”

Auburn will drop in to see McCreary later this week. Steele plans to go see the in-state cornerback this week, and Woodson will visit him next week.

The Tigers aren’t rushing McCreary. They have other uncommitted defensive back options remaining who will officially visit in the coming weeks. Also, in McCreary’s case, he wants to take his time with a few visits since this is new to him, given his recent de-commitment from South Alabama.

Even though McCreary isn’t rushing, he’ll have a choice soon after the visits.

“I’m not waiting until signing day. I know I’ll make my decision before signing day,” he said.

Montgomery DB confident offer will come

Cam Taylor’s player host was a fitting one.

The 3-star athlete from Montgomery, Ala., took his official visit last weekend. He spent a majority of his time with Auburn defensive back Daniel Thomas, whom Taylor knows from Montgomery. Thomas took an official visit in January 2016, not knowing whether he’d have a spot in Auburn’s class. His patience paid off with a National Signing Day commitment.

Taylor is leaning on similar optimism.

“I really hung out with Daniel Thomas a lot. He’s from the city,” Taylor said. “He really told me to not worry about things because you never know how things are going to work out. You never know who is going to sign and commit. It’s a process. You have to trust the process and take everything day by day. …

“Be patient. Things are going to happen. [Malzahn] said things are going to happen but just to wait on it right now. It’s coming. It is. Like I said, be patient.”

Taylor has reason to believe it’ll happen.

For one, Auburn has a need at cornerback. The Tigers are pursuing some highly ranked options — Olaijah Griffin, Tyson Campbell and Kelvin Joseph — but they’ve stayed warm on several in-state targets, including McCreary and Taylor. But Taylor isn’t your typical story of a guy in whom a bigger school started showing interest late in the process.

Taylor has been on Auburn’s radar for years. He’s attended virtually every big Auburn recruiting event or game for the last two seasons. His relationship with Steele is one of the stronger recruit-coach relationships in this 2018 class.

Taylor has confidence because he’s had those tough conversations with Steele about the realities of recruiting and what it all means for his place in the class.

“Coach Steele and Malzahn gave me the direct truth. They’re very transparent with me. Coach Steele has always been real with me so it’s coming, I know that it is,” Taylor said. “[My confidence], it’s very high. I’m going to take my time with everything. I won’t make a decision until Feb. 7.”

Auburn continues to recruit Taylor as a cornerback-safety hybrid option. That’s where he wants to be. He will take visits the next two weekends to Florida Atlantic and Nebraska, respectively. Lane Kiffin and Scott Frost see Taylor as a versatile enough athlete to not recruit him to a specific position.

Offensive tackle target off the board

One of Auburn’s offensive tackle targets is off the board.

Jalen Goss was a potential early-signing candidate for the Tigers. That didn’t happen. Goss’ patience resulted in a change of plans for the athletic offensive tackle. The Valdosta, Ga., native will stay closer to home. He committed to Florida State on Monday afternoon.

Auburn has other tackle targets. But since Goss was considered the reliable backup plan, the Tigers will take a greater sense of desperation into offensive tackle recruiting leading up to signing day.

The focus will be on Dylan Wonnum (already visited officially), William Barnes and Richard Gouraige. The latter two — Barnes and Gouraige — have official visits set up, but Auburn is likely in second place for both prospects. In Wonnum’s case, the Tigers are chasing South Carolina.

The offensive line situation isn’t dire, but the staff has about a month to fix a problem that could get worse.

Really wishing we had pushed for Goss to jump on board in December now. Would mean we at least had an OT committed before Hand bailed. Gouraige is really our only hope right now & a big reason he loves AU was Hand. Gonna have to hope we nail the OV this weekend & he clicks with Grimes

Auburn recruiting question of the day: What does Herb Hand’s departure mean for offensive line recruiting? (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn’s offensive line recruiting leading up to National Signing Day was already the biggest area of focus. It becomes even more so with the latest coaching news.

As first reported by Brett McMurphy, I can confirm Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand will leave for Texas to be co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. This news didn’t come as a major surprise to the coaching staff, though the two offensive line signees — Jalil Irvin and Kam Stutts — were caught off guard, albeit understanding, about the move.

With only two offensive linemen signed, that position group was the center of attention this month. Changing position coaches this close to National Signing Day seems like a cynical sign for that position’s recruiting the next few weeks. I’ve been told Auburn expects to sign a new offensive line coach by Wednesday, and that coach will hit the road quickly to start recruiting.

Here are the offensive line prospects to watch going forward, though more names could emerge depending on relationships already in place with the incoming offensive line coach.

4-star tackle Dylan Wonnum, Tucker, Ga.
4-star tackle William Barnes, Apopka, Fla.
4-star tackle Richard Gouraige, Tampa, Fla.
4-star guard Tank Jenkins, Montgomery, Ala.
3-star guard Ed Montilus, Apopka, Fla.

That list hasn’t changed. What potentially has changed is where Auburn stands for each.

Wonnum officially visited over the weekend, which means he would have to come back for an unofficial visit to meet the new offensive line coach. Hand visited Barnes and Montilus earlier this week in Apopka, Fla., recruiting on Auburn’s behalf, so this likely came as a surprise to them. Jenkins appears to be trending toward Oklahoma, and again, it’s unknown how much a new offensive line coach would prioritize the Montgomery talent.

Perhaps the most interesting of the group is Gouraige.

He’s the only lineman of the group to react on social media so far. That’s not the response most Tigers fans want to see. But it’s salvageable. Gouraige will be on an official visit this weekend, and he’s the primary tackle target right now.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see an offensive line coach hired who has ties to some of these prospects from the state of Florida. Gouraige, Barnes and Montilus are all SEC-caliber prospects from similar areas in Florida. It’s also an area that has been a hotbed for Auburn recruiting in the past.

If it’s my call, I find an replacement who knows that region well — and even has prior relationships with Gouraige, Barnes and Montilus.

About that Ben....
