On radio interviews Joel klatt said LSU finished in the ap top 10 just once in the 70s 80s and 90s decades. I didn't feel like gargoyling it, but this seems surprising.

He claimed this stat to make the point that LSU is just an ok job, not a top tier job.

We all know L5U football started in 2000.

What's new?

They are smoking crack if they think Tom Herman picks LSU over Texas, USCw or Notre Dame.

Klatt is dumb, by no measurable metric was he correct. 3 top 10 finishes not 1, and if an all time top 10 program is "just ok" I guess he is pretty picky. Not to mention our talent base and coaching budget (including assistants)

LSU football has 22 top 10 AP finished in 82 years of the AP poll. Good for 27% of the seasons we fielded a team.

70-90s were our "mediocre" stretch though I guess.. Only 3 top 10 finishes, with 3 more all the way down at #11.

70: #7

97: #13

I mean, does what happened in the 70s and 80s really matter when talking about how good a job is today?

They were a historically mediocre team until Saban arrived, and he got out as soon as he could.

Finished top 10 1969-1972. Finished top 10 in 1986-87 as well. Several top 15s too. Everyone knows the 90s were not good so that shouldn't be shocking. Regardless, what LSU was 20+ years ago is irrelevant to how good the job is today. Things change

If winning two national titles in the past 15 years makes us mediocre what exactly does it take to be above average in his opinion?

Not always. But if all your success in the last half century is tied to the best c.f. coach in 30 years, it tells you something.

Cool. Saban was at Michigan State just as long, did they win 2 conference titles and a national title?

Not average at all the last 15 years. No doubt. He was talking about place in the modern cfb era overall. Only Ohio state and Bama wouldn't trade the last 15 years with LSU.

I guess it depends on defining what top tier means, does he say? Does he define as top ten, etc? Got a link? Thx

This board is so uneducated

All time program rankings:
CFN#11
ESPN#9
AP#11
CFBDW#9
tiptop25#11

By decade:

Pre 2000:

Top 10 AP finishes
34: #8
36: #2
37: #8
46: #8
49: #9
58: #1
59: #3
61: #4

87: #5
01: #7
03: #2
05: #6
06: #3
07: #1
10: #8
11: #2

That's 22 top 10 finishes (not including 11ths obviously) in the 82 years of the AP polls existence, or over 25% of the time we field a team we finish top 10

Finished ranked in the final AP poll 39 times in 82 seasons. Good for 48% of our seasons. Polls only moved to top 25 in the late 80s I believe, varied between ranking top 10 and top 20 before then.

Success in the 70s and 80s plays no part in where a head coach wants to go today.

LSU is a better job than Notre Dame

LSU has better resources and more talent at their disposal.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is living in the 1940s

This isn't the 70's, 80's or 90's.
