Who knew that Finebaum would become the darling of ESPN

I never had anything against the guy like a lot of people who liked to bash him. Sure he kind of uses some of his less well hinged callers for talk show fodder. But at least he always seemed to feel a little embarrassed about some of the stuff they say. Besides, they do it voluntarily.
But I'll admit his growing uber popularity on pretty much ever ESPN show when they discuss college football has come as something of a surprise. Not a bad surprise but I just wouldn't have predicted it.

Part of the continued suck of ESPN.

Water has some interesting and unusual properties.

Theyre actually paid to

I always thought PF's popularity would be limited to the state of Alabama. Then he got more stations in other Southern states. I thought, ok, our neighboring states are listening just to laugh at us. Then they started calling and doing the same thing. Then he went to cable radio, and I thought, no way, folks up north and on the west coast would listen to this. Then they started calling in to smack talk also. So if Jerry Springer and Maury can do their stuff, then why not Paul?

They just needed to replace the loudmouthed skip bayless with somebody.

He actually does have good guests.
Or did about 10 years ago when I had a lengthy commute and would listen.
His Pat Dye interviews back in the day were some of the GOAT.

I'm pretty sure all of the recurring callers are paid to be outrageous.

Good analogy. He is the Sally Jessie Rapheal of college football w/out the glasses.

He has made a nice living being pompous. He actually toned it down quite a bit about 5 years ago when he got his SIRIUS show. I still wouldnt listen to him.
He came into being right after Bryant died and he absolutely raped Bama during the Perkins, Curry and Dubose years. He was almost maniacal in his diatribes in those years. Then the Terry Bowden days he was all over Auburn. he HATED Bowden and it was reciprocated.
His talks with Pat Dye are missed. Dye would get furious during the weekly talk. Dye was always right but Finebaum would push his buttons.

I miss the days of his A.M. 960 show with Buddy Vickers. The callers were better and the show was more interesting. The more available his show has become, the worst it has gotten.
Howard Stern also has lost a bit of his edge the older he has gotten and the more national his show became. Although, I think Howard is 100 times more talented than Fbomb.

I remember when he use to have Pat Dye and Gene Stalling on every Friday during football season and they would argue back and forth like the typical Alabama and Auburn fans and it was great!

Back in the 960 days he had a caller named Mildred. That was some of the funniest humor I have heard on radio. At one time he had her calls on his web site. Vickers would lose it as soon as the phone was answered and she said "Paullll".

From a legitimate interviewer aspect, he is very good. He asks very good insightful questions...very well prepared. But his man-love with Saban is so over the top and his regular callers are such incredible yahoos that it makes it hard to listen to him.
For the most part I object very much to this worm's existence.

I do agree that Caitlyn Jenner and Paul Finebaum have become the two darlings of ESPN. Two peas in a pod. It doesn't say much for ESPN though.

I think this is a very fair assessment. His career started rocketing the moment Saban was hired and he accurately predicted Saban would win the National Championship in year 3. I think he knows he rode Saban's coattails to more success. It must be a lot like listening to Lou Holtz talk about Notre Dame to most of you.

Paul is extremely political correct and that is one of the three key attributes ESPN looks for.
The other two are the ability to generate social media traffic which he does adequately enough and the third is to demonstrate a modicum of intelligence and repeat the talking points ESPN deems important.

Finebaum said it himself, re his show: "it's all about ENTERTAINMENT" ( his emphasis). Which, with his callers, is what his show is all about. ESPN is pushing him as its college football expert as it knows he will stir up shite...higher ratings.....and, too, he draws attention to his own show, which ESPN paid buckets of money to the SEC for the rights. It's called self promotion, and both Finebaum & ESPN are good at that. His interviews are good for the most part, he lets his guests actually talk, but his pimping for bama/saban makes his show unwatchable for me & most people here in La. His radio show on the local ESPN affiliate was cancelled half way through its first season, they could not sell advertising for it.

Someone posted them to YouTube. For those of you who missed it, check it out. There are over 50 calls here. Goldmine.

ESPN is all about "EMBRACE DEBATE!!" these days. Finebaum is nothing if not about trolling debates.
