“They were mesh charging from a defensive end standpoint, which they've never done before,” Malzahn said. “We didn't do a good enough job from an offensive coaching standpoint adjusting quick enough.”
"The theme here, however, is not a good one for Auburn. First-year offensive line coach Herb Hand, who helps Malzahn call plays from the press box on game days, has a history of coaching offensive lines with blocking problems. Seven of his last eight offensive lines have given up so many negative plays, they ranked 105th or lower in seven of the last eight seasons."
“As far as the communication from Herb goes downstairs, I am (comfortable),” Malzahn said. “Obviously when you’re not doing as well you evaluate everything and from a coach’s standpoint, how can we improve? How can we give our guys the best chance of winning? We’re definitely evaluating that. There will be some changes, different things to help our guys. And to help the overall offense.”

Like I’ve said, a lot of that [Saturday] was on the mesh charge and we’ve got to do a better job adjusting quicker. First game there was a few of that same type situations. Yeah that's pretty concerning. It was pretty clear what A&M was doing all game, and we never made any adjustments. You'er right Gus..that is terrible coaching. Garret was wayyy to quick to pull Smith and try to block him.

If that was done on the middle school level the coach in question would be told to just teach in class and stay away from ruining young kids' lives on the football field.

I think Hand has been the most disappointing coach so far. I honestly thought he would help Gus get the offense back to running like it did at Tulsa with a similar skillset at QB in Sean White. I didn't expect this OL to be dominant & I don't think anyone thought he was a better position coach than Grimes but at least for me I thought he would help a lot in improving our gameplanning & adjustments during the game. Instead we look worse at both of those

There was a reason PSU was happy to see him go. I heard Christian Hackenberg was pissed Hand didnt leave sooner.

I knew when JB Grimes "left" it would be detrimental. Guy was a fricking animal. Look at those past years stats, look at 'em. Lots of excuses for this line when none of them or the backups are that bad minus Leff (who maybe I'm wrong after PFF rating). Clemson's DL was not as good as we made them look; rated high - sure but young as frick and they walked into our backfield like into their mom's kitchen. Shouldn't need Hand to come in acting as Yoda trying to coach whisper Gus into using the old ways of the force. It's not fricking hard, watch your old Tulsa tapes Goddamnit and use the plays SW could execute if he lacks the arm strength or time in pocket. We're not inventing the Hubble Telescope here we're changing a some football plays in the playbook, going harder to easier actually.
