tried to post this on the Off Topic forum but there was some kind of error. posting it here since i have it all typed up:

Swung by Athens today to kill some time so i didn't get stuck in rush hour traffic in ATL.

some observations:

lot of dangerous looking people downtown. also a lot of weirdos dressed in all black, etc. there were a lot of rough looking guys loitering on the streets. it appears there is a lot of public housing nearby. it didn't feel like a college town to me.

i don't think i would go downtown at night especially by myself, and if i had a daughter, i would not want her to go to UGA.

the campus is much more hilly than i realized. way too many steps to climb. i probably would not have gone here on account of all the steps. i was walking from Lumpkin Street and cut over to run by the fountain on way to North quad and i had to go up like 7 flights of steps.

traffic is horrendous. it was backed up like crazy on Lumpkin at 7 pm. fortunately i was planning on turning right on Baxter.

the university had dug up the front part of North quad area, and a fire hydrant was in the middle of it.

i think the campus has too many trees. kind of dark in there.

And according to Tillman, the top reason to attend a university is if it has a "crystal clear lake near foothills"...I mean, every employer in the world has those qualifications at the top of their "most desired" qualities for potential employees.

lmao all y'all some racist arse pussies. The public housing isn't some crime pit. They generally stay there while students live around them.

Yes and no. You need to be smart when travelling down that way. You're usually fine during the day time, though. I had a friend who was trying to walk home from downtown to Abbey West (fricking genius, let me tell you) and he got jumped while walking by the projects. Granted, this was at around 3 AM and he should have just hopped his arse in a taxi. They beat the shite out of him and took all the money in his wallet (which included his rent money for that month because he cashed the check his parents had sent. Like I said, the kid wasn't too bright), and they also took his shoes, so he had to walk the rest of the way barefoot.

You're going to want to avoid any housing project at 3 AM, so this isn't just an Athens problem. The "scary looking" people downtown are harmless. At least they were in my day. The biggest menace downtown after dark is over-served, testosterone-addled 18-22 year old white guys who come from upper-middle class backgrounds.

Traffic over there can suck at busy times. I can't speak to having too many trees as I've never been on the UG campus, but you just complained that 90 degrees & jeans was too hot for you. Sounds like you could've parked yourself under one of those trees.

I like Athens, can't stand UG. But it's way better living here than it is in metro Atlanta

i park on Clayton Street in front of a redneck sounding bar, the Moonshine something, and this isn't too far from College Street, and the UGA arch. it felt like a seedy sketchy area, what can i say.

my goal was to walk the campus to get exercise and see the campus especially the football stadium. sitting under a tree wouldn't achieve this goal. i probably would not have been sweating if not for all the stairs. i could see those stairs being treacherous in the winter too.

i've heard a lot of students have classes on both north and south campus and they got to do the hike several times a day.

you live in athens but never been on the uga campus?

not too many college towns have public housing next to the downtown area. or that was the impression that i had. downtown Cola feels much safer than athens even though there are good number of aggressive panhandlers

it was surprising that a college town known for being liberal makes you pay for parking even after 6 pm. figured parking would be free down there. lol they a bunch of hypocrites and greedy capitalists.

Doesn't really change the fact that the folks from the housing projects don't show up downtown. There are the homeless, but they're harmless. ACCPD and UGAPD maintain such a strong presence downtown that it is extremely safe. The cops can often be dicks, but I used to go out 4 or 5 nights a week and never had a single problem over the years I was there, or even when I was visiting friends before and after I attended UGA.

The only real crime I ever saw committed was freshman year a guy roofied my girlfriend's drink and while I was rounding everyone up to leave, she disappeared. We caught up to the guy about 2 blocks down the street while he was trying to drag her to his car. I was still in football playing shape at that point and I gave that dude the beating of a life time. However, that's not an Athens problem, drugging girls happens across the country on a daily basis. She was not very smart about accepting a drink from a stranger, I was not smart to tell her to sit tight and leaving her alone to try and get everyone to leave, and that guy was not smart for trying to rape my girlfriend. I very well might have killed him that night if my friends hadn't been there to pull me off.
