Yeah I heard that guy from Georgia call in and say he was sick and tired of the bias against a&m, as well as just generally being fed up with the longhorn network motivations of ESPN pumping the sip fricks up. I let out a quick lil whoop and gig 'em.

I love A&M, but our University had been nothing if not a series of bumbling gaffes over the last 20 years. From refusing to update facilities and falling WAY behind in the athletics arms race for over a decade to giving coaches huge guaranteed contracts for minimal achievements to vision 20/20 to trying to become a diploma mill to disbanding the journalism department...we as a general rule lack foresight as an institution.

Roger, we currently LEAD the football facilities arms race, we jumped to the SEC and have dramatically improved our exposure
We have been on the upswing big picture wise, I know you want more and I respect that but to say we've been fricking it up royally is dumb

I mean, we kinda lucked into it. If Jameill Showers starts in 2012 and Texas doesn't develop the LHN none of that ever happens.
What our administration is still trying to do to us academically is disturbing. We are actively trying to hit 80k students and double the size of the engineering department. Additionally, we are implementing extensive AA policies to increase diversity at the expense of qualification.

Gentlemen, there is no conspiracy. You are behaving like thirteen year old girls.
UT is getting the love because of the story. Embattled coach. Will he survive? Last years game where UT gets throttled. Can they even compete? Then the horns come out very motivated, with an engaged stadium, and play quite well. It's not a David/Goliath story but has those elements, especially when you factor in the saving Charlie angle.
Conversely, the A&M game is more balanced. UCLA higher rated but A&M actually favored by odds makers. Thus, nowhere the drama and story lines.
Now, if you want to bitch about something, do so about our media department that does NOTHING to tell our story. It was easy to see in the broadcast, especially pregame, that UT had fed ABC multiple story angles. ABC was happy to go that route because, 1.) they were compelling and 2.) they don't have to work. We can do the same thing if we know how --- the correct answer is we don't know how.

The diploma mill argument pisses me off. I am the first to lament the slow plodding loss of tradition that is permeating our university. However, it is a needed change from a small military college mindset. The overall sense of service and sacrifice derived from our most treasured traditions remains intact.
There are only three traditions that I could not stomach being changed: silver taps, muster, and the ring. To me they define two major tenets of "aggiedom," service and brotherhood.
How does this fit into the diploma mill argument? Texas A&M as a public institution has a duty to supply our state with sufficient skilled workers for the state economy. We are blessed with an economy/population that is growing at a high rate. It is understandable for us to grow relative to the population. I believe that our university is the most well equipped to train future workers, not only academically- but with work ethic.
As another aside for your qualification comment, I would be livid if we ever eschewed the top 10% qualification (if we haven't already). I am well aware that there are kids more qualified coming from more strenuous high schools, and that plenty of small town kids flunk out.
Are we to punish small town kids for being born in a poor/small district? There is already a gap. I routinely tutored full ride kids that went to 5a schools while getting no monetary aid for my education. The difference? My school was a small town in Texas.

I guess I'm not understanding your point. I don't disagree with any of that, and none of it has anything to do with a goal of 80k students being absurd.

Main point is that our public university has a duty to provide skilled workers to our state's workforce. As the state population/economy is growing at a high rate, it is not crazy to have the education rates/institutions to grow at a similar rate.

sorry but Roger is right.
if there is THAT much of a need for more educational opportunities in the state it would be much better for everyone to improve the other state schools like Texas State, Houston, North Texas, SFA, Sam Houston etc etc etc.
going to 80k is a money grab pure and simple.

Sorry but statistically we are not expanding at the same rate as Texas' population (approximately 10%). If A&M expanded at that rate we would be looking at 5-6k increases every year.
Mathematically, it would only take 3 years get to yalls doomsday 80k. Considering it has taken about 6 years for us to go from 50-60k I think the middle ground should satisfy everyone.
