“(Tennessee) they do have playoff talent,” Bartoo said on the air. “(Tennessee’s) recruited in the Top 15 the last four years, this is come to Jesus time for Butch Jones… This is it. These are all his guys and look at the window of opportunity in his division.”
According to Bartoo, every other team in the East have significant disadvantages compared to the Vols this season and should cruise toward Atlanta. Of course assuming head coach Butch Jones doesn’t get in the way with a poor sideline decision or two.
The reason for Bartoo’s high confidence in Tennessee this year centers on the team’s addition of defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. According to Bartoo, Shoop registered as the second best defensive assistant in the nation last season and has proven to be an elite coordinator capable of taking the Vols all the way to the mountaintop this season.
“It Tennessee is going to win that division, it’s because of the defense,” Bartoo said. “[Landing Bob Shoop], that was an incredible hire, the second best defense efficiency coach guy in college football is now at Tennessee. If Tennessee wins that division, it’s because of that hire. That’s a national championship defensive coordinator.”

It's like every year is a competition by the media to see just how excited they can get Tennessee fans before the season brings them crashing back to earth, and every year they manage to set a new record. There may be actual suicides in Knoxville this year when the Vols once again fail to get the job done.

i'm glad to see the Big Orange back. the SEC just isn't the same without a strong UT team and I know you fans have been suffering. as an LSU fan I know how that is; we spent almost a decade in the toilet in the 90's.
I would love to see another LSU vs UT game in Atlanta.

Back? Who the hell did they beat last year? Hmmmm, 3 out of 4 OCC games, then UK, Vandy, a down UGA and USC. Played a weak Northwestern team in a bowl game....just watch the NW QB and you will see one of the worse passers of all time.
Pray tell me what they did again? But VS will be right on cue and say he didnt read this and downvoted it anyway

National championship DC in Shoop? When did this guy win a national championship? You know what he did do though? At Penn State last year his defense gave up 55 points in a loss to the same Michigan State offense that couldn't score a single solitary point against Alabama a few weeks later.
Doesn't sound like a national championship coach to me.
edit: With new coaching staffs, though, at UGA, USC, and Missouri, and with McElwain in only his 2nd year at UF, UT should absolutely win the East division. If not this year, then Butch Jones probably never will. If they do,though, it's not a sign that UT is "back" because that division longterm will belong to UGA and UF. UT's heydays were the 40s and 50s. Since 1970 they are 5th in winning pct and 6th in titles in the SEC.

You'll still get smacked around by superior west opponents.

UT goes to aTm and plays Bama at home. UGA goes to Ole Miss, plays Auburn at home...and gets UT at home. Advantage UGA.

That’s a national championship defensive coordinator.
Said literally no one, ever.

I give the OP credit... if I was going to sink so low as to use an SDS article to brag on my team I'd create a one off alt account so the shame wouldn't follow me around.

Kiffin is going to shred that UT defense.

Never. In the FBS he's been defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt, Penn State, and now Tennessee.
