That should put the kibosh on that nonsense.
That's ridiculous. Who fricking cares?

It's funny that people fall in love with a neighborhood that is well-kept and organized, buy a house in the neighborhood, and then bitch about the HOA.

Same in the neighborhood we bought our house in. Mostly because it is your parents neighborhood if memory serves.

I think the wide-range of responses in this thread is a good example of the issue. Some HOAs are pretty strictly enforced (and over some stupid shite) and that doesn't always come across just by reviewing the bylaws before you buy. Especially if you're moving into an area you're not familiar with. Especially the ones noting the changes in enforcement with the change in HOA Presidents/Board Members.
And the reality is, in most metro areas unless you happen to live in an area that's old family farmland or without a close-knit neighborhood you're almost certainly going to have to build a new house in an neighborhood with an HOA.

BGB - I agree. Houston is a bit different animal. There is technically no zoning, so the only thing that keeps your neighbor from running a business out of their home or raising chickens in the backyard is the HOA. I've had some that are jerks and some that are fantastic. If enough people don't like the board, it is pretty easy to replace them at the next election.

Our HOA is pretty good. Dues are used for neighborhood entrance/exit upkeep, security monitoring, directories, and block parties. Never heard of anyone here getting a notice for yard problems, but everyone seems to maintain their yard anyway. No one wants their house to be the eyesore of the neighborhood

Too far. Stick to big stuff like no personal junkyards and no plywood storage shacks or redneck quality additions. Life is too short to worry about uniformity of colors and flowers and mailboxes.

Never understood the attraction to living in a sterile neighborhood with an HOA. Giving up some of my property rights isn't something I take lightly

Can't fathom it really. Would be humorous to have some fella walking around my "neighborhood" telling folks what to do. I don't think he'd make it past the first house.

Yeah, I don't think that would go over well here. I like the unique nature of some of the neighbors
One of them has a ski fence/gate.

Yes they have and from what I've witnessed most of it is cause by noisy people with too much time on their hands BUT....

I guess it depends on how hard the HOA is up her arse. If they've forced foreclosure on her home, leaving her thousands of dollars in debt and saddled with legal fees I could see where that would push someone who has a lot of other shite going on to the edge.
