Tennessee has made the hiring of Ashley Smith official. Smith, 27, will work directly with head coach Butch Jones on a day-to-day basis.
It's also worth noting that Smith is the sister of offensive tackle Trey Smith, who is the nation's number one overall football recruit, according to ESPN.

Nothing to see here. I'm sure she was the most highly qualified for the job.

She was a manager of the women's basketball team for 4 years and had a job with the NCAA. This is far less egregious than the usual family/girlfriend hiring.

She was apparently in pretty high demand around the SEC so I could see Tennessee being forced to pay her a substantial amount over what someone with that title would normally get.
You hate to pay more than you have to, but if it takes $300-$400k per year for good compliance/someone CBJ trusts then I would understand.

As Jayson Swain just pointed out on Twitter, Tennessee has hired Ashley Smith to a position in the football office. She is the sister of Trey Smith.
She was previously at the NCAA in Indianapolis, but had a few offers to head to several schools to work with different football departments. She chose to head to her alma mater, the University of Tennessee.

Yeah, it's kinda weird that she's actually very qualified and we're her alma mater. The hire makes sense even without her brother.

She's not unfortunate looking either.

EJ is back in Columbus for their big recruiting weekend, I would not count the Buckeyes out.

Was just in Knoxville with Trey Smith a day or two ago per our boys on 247 and Rivals. UT will be in it until the end for Emory.

By all accounts, EJ is choosing between his childhood dream school (tOSU) and the school he fell in love with during recruitment (UT). He's mentioned several times how close he is to the people at UT and how much he loves the people. Our biggest advantage with him is due to relationships he has with coaches, players, and others at UT. Distance is also playing a positive role for us, imo. Although he's said he's not really concerned with QB depth charts, UT is a better situation from that perspective as well.
Even though, tOSU was the school he grew up cheering and dreaming about, I think relationships and distance will ultimately tip the scales in our favor but it's still incredibly early in his recruitment. 18 months is forever in recruiting.

It is weird that she's both a tenn alum and qualified, I agree.

VQ posted a story last night and it sounds like it's all but a done deal.
