Since the other thread got anchored due to lack of info. From the Tennessean (From LSUGrad9295):
Very sad...
quote:
The family of former University of Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt released a statement Sunday morning acknowledging "the past few days have been difficult for Pat as her early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type progresses."
quote:
Summitt is "struggling" and those close to her are "preparing for the worst," a source involved in the situation confirmed earlier Sunday.
"I don't think anybody knows whether she will last a day, a month, or a year," the source said.
Very sad...

End stage is profound and especially tough for the patient's loved ones. Condolences and sympathy for all who love and admire her.

I didn't realize it was that far along. Just terrible and sad.

Much better thread. Other dude should be banned.

Condolences. Truly one of the greatest coaches of all time, by any standard.

So unfair... She's such a great person.

Very sad to hear. I didn't realize she got bad so quickly.
I lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's. Her suffering lasted way too long, and it affected our entire family. Especially my mother.
I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Prayers for her, her son Tyler and family.

Nor I. My great-grandmother sat in a nursing home for 8 years in late stage Alzheimer's (she lost her faculties quick but suffered for so long) and I have a great-aunt that was just diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and fading quickly. Both were very sharp and witty and it's the most depressing thing to see someone go through.
As a girl who played basketball in the 90s and got the opportunity to attend one of her camps, this hurts. Badly. She's a pioneer not just in women's basketball but in women's sports in the U.S. Her reach and influence cannot be understated. We're losing not just a women's basketball great but one of THE basketball greats. Period. It's awful.

Feel bad for Pat, but worse for the loved ones. Hopefully it ends soon so she can RIP and the loved ones can reflect on all the good times.

Her losing her mind doesn't mean she will die fwiw. My grandmother was in a vegetative state for a very long time. I literally wish we could have euthanized her when she got to that point.

In some ways, I would say it might be considered a merciful thing. In many ways, our lives are a sum of memories....both our own and others memories of us. It would be very difficult for her family to remember her in her weakened state, unable to remember the things she did and accomplished during her lifetime.
I hope they can find solace in knowing that she did not have to go through many years of suffering and deterioration.

Medical science has fallen behind the times. This is awful.

This is so sad. She was one of those people that you think are invincible.

Praise God for her contributions to UT, the SEC and women's basketball! I pray her family & the lives she's touched can find peace in this.
