Don't worry. They'll just pass the cost onto the fans.

I'm not opposed to anything but the extra buyout year. Maybe I'm not following recruiting enough, but in practice, does this help us get a single extra recruit? I know nobody can answer that in confidence, but it seems like such a question of degree.

Some kid may be pushed over the edge by this extra show of confidence? Maybe two? Or they just as easily may see right through it and realize it's not going to stop us from firing Gus, and we just gave him 2 million bucks for shite performance.

Kinda surprised at the lack of melt in this thread.

I don't hate it but seems like weird timing to me. If the motivation of doing this is to show stability or a vote of confidence in Malzahn, it seems like you would've done that when we were trying to hire coaches. Nobody wants to come here and be one and done.

The only other motivation I can think of is locking up Gus before he has a breakout year (which I'm assuming JJ thinks he will have). That seems kinda pointless because if he does that Gus is going to expect another raise anyways.

Our recruiting didn't seem to be hurt at all by Gus' situation.

Yep, while I'll gladly take a statement year from Gus, it'll be ridiculous when we redo his deal then even after extending him following some mediocre results.

Not a fan at all of the raise.

He's done nothing the last two years to justify getting a raise.

It's not a raise. The amount of money will remain the same over the next four years. 500k more for the next two years and 500k less for the two after that. All it did was remove the automatic raise that was built in.

No problem with this. I'd really like to see the defense turn the corner this year though.

We haven't had a dumpster fire in recruiting since 2009

We also have only been outside the top 10 1 time since '09 according to the composite which was 2012 when we finished 11th

I'm not too worried about a buyout increase that could be paid for by raising ticket ~$1 per game.

Also, I have a hard time believing we fire Gus after 7+ wins regardless unless it is really really ugly.

Reaction to Baylor job coming open? Being that it's a horrible time to hire a coach?

We might not have to wait that long this year.

Clemson, LSU and Texas A&M...right off the bat. And I won't turn my nose up at Arkansas State, either, given how Auburn struggled against Jacksonville State and San Jose State in 2015.

The HC always needs to have at least 4 years left on his deal, from a recruiting perspective.

But my personal belief is that this is a great thing. I mean if you're going to go through all of the growing pains of hiring a "green" head coach, why in the world would you not see it through long enough to see the same coach you thought was worth hiring with NO experience.....once he HAS experience. He's only that much better of a HC now than when you hired him, and now you're going to fire him? It's not like we hired a HC with 15 years of HC experience. He's still learning, so I'd prefer we reap the rewards of betting on him early in his HC career.

Except it wasn't hurting recruiting...

I agree with you as well.

I also am amazed that people don't think this matters in recruiting. Everyone isn't Carl Lawson with Carl's dad in his ear. Most of these young men make decisions on the silliest whims. I am embarrassed to say it but I showed no interest in a college program years ago simply because their uniform colors were similar to my High Schools rival colors. I was 17 but it was dumb then and it is still dumb today. A coach you trust telling you another coach and his staff will be gone with some actually evidence to back up such a claim is a strong tool to use against a school.
