"What a Smart hire!"
"Bulldogs get Smart, but can they win big?"
Etc...
Lots of cheesy 'smart' headlines so far, right? But what if things go south???
YOU KNOW THEY'RE COMING. Prepare for the worst. Hope for the best.

Watching that still makes me want to cry. We would have killed the Irish.

Geez and I still don't understand that call.Mitchell was COVERED like a blanket and had absolutely no where to go in his route. He was boxed in on the front corner of thd endzone and from behind by the Bama defender. There is absolutely ZERO chance of any success
on that play.

If we have losses as painful as either of those again the Smart puns are going to be literally the last thing I'm concerned with.

Defender can't see the ball tho. Receiver has the advantage there.

I'll take that scenario every day of the week if I'm on defense

GSB would be better without posts from the OP.

To be fair, it was really Smart coverage by the defense on that play.

That be Jedi Master Conley.

Huh?Conley was the one who caught the ball Michell was
the intended receiver who was COVERED.Unless you think they were throwing to a guy 3 yards short of the endzone
with 9 seconds left and no timeouts.

Back shoulder throw to mitchell who would have been OOB at the zero or TD, but ball was tipped and Conley was as confused as anyone to turn around and see it coming to him.

RD... You press up the field and get his head turned around and then you post up essentially on the short throw. It works.

The Smart part about the play call was that if it hadn't been tipped (thanks to Gurley II missing his block) and was incomplete, the clock would have stopped, and we could have ran another play.
It was a brilliant call under the most intense pressure that is possible and Richt should be commended for it. Of course though, to this day, there are still nega knee jerk ers who actually think Richt blew it.

Understood. I misunderstood what you were saying initially, but you're right.

Y'all should watch some videos of goal line, back shoulder throws on press man coverage. It's pretty common really.

Peter, I'm not and have never pretended to be an Xs Os expert. Can you explain how Gurley is coached to execute his block on that play. Is that where the play broke down..Or was it just a great play by the defender that got a finger tip on the ball?

I'm aware of the play and perhaps it was exactly what Bama was expecting. It's also an extremely "safe" play that had little chance for success. If you are going to run a play like that (that depends heavily on proper execution)you might as well spike the ball make sure everyone is sure of exactly what their assignment is and your timing is spot on.

I tend to lean towards this. Upshaw (I think) got really high and just made a play. If Upshaw doesn't get it, it's Mitchell vs Kirkpatrick on a back shoulder fade. I'll take my chances with Mitchell in that case.
