Agree with Bert on the first idea, the second one would be a clusterfrick.

The first is questionable too......If a player goes undrafted and wants to go back to college for his final year, then who's to say there's room for him on his old roster. The draft is after NSD, and we have yearly scholarship limits of 25/class. There likely wouldn't be any room for an undrafted player to make a college roster 2 months after NSD.

Damn, didn't think of that I retract my statement of support for Bert, and reiterate that he is fat.

You mean the MLB which has 40 rounds and has high school players eligible to be drafted

No different than what the NBA is doing.

College BBall players can declare and then opt to return BUT they must opt to return in early April - actually one day before BBall signing day. The NBA draft isn't until June.

Conceptually, I wouldn't have a problem at all with players testing the water all the way through the draft and being allowed to return if they didn't like what happened (with the limitations of no agent or extra benefits). I don't find that any different than the random undergrad going on a job interview and then declining the position.

The problem is the timing. National signing day is in early February. The NFL draft is in late April. If players are allowed to return after signing day, you've got a roster management nightmare where virtually every major program will find themselves either short players because they assumed someone would return and didn't or over the 85 limit because some guy decided to come back.

The basketball deadline to withdraw from the draft and return is before the late signing period for this very reason.

There's a pretty easy solution for football, and that's to implement an early signing period (which IMO would help get rid of some of the flip drama we see every year) and then have a second late period after the NFL draft - but for some reason nobody seems to be a fan of an early football signing period.

i kinda wish they'd let them go straight from high school in football- that way the idiocy surrounding the theory of the poor poor players getting treated so horribly almost like slaves by having to go to college may cease.

You would potentially have a team lose a 3rd or 4th round pick that thinks they could improve their stock. That could frick over a lot of teams considering there are only 7 rounds.

The players just need to stop leaving college early when they are not likely to be drafted in the first or second round . These rules would just cause all Underclassmen to fall in the draft,. Teams are not going to want to waste a pick on a guy who may go back to college. If anything they should have a combine for underclass men before they have to declare for the draft so they can get a better idea where they will be drafted.

Cal does this with his players. The whole team registered for the draft.

They get quoted and withdraw their name. Its about the kids, not the program.

I completely agree. It would also go a long way to making the term 'student-athlete' legitimate again.

From there, Bielema went one step further: Forget undrafted players. How about players who are drafted but not necessarily in the spot they envisioned? Should they be allowed to come back too?

That would end up being a clusterfrick of epic proportions for both CFB and the NFL.

That shite wouldn't work. What happens to their grades? Players who declare routinely leave school so they can focus on the draft. If they go undrafted, what happens when they try to back to school after missing a whole semester?

I guess they would have to train at school and keep going to class to be eligible, doesn't seem hard

I do not really follow pro football.

When players declare for the draft, don't they get an agent?

Wouldn't that negate the amateur status?

Am I wrong about that?

It's not required, but with the way the rules are now, yes, there's no reason not to

They all will declare just to see what happens. Terrible idea.
