I find it hilarious that the NCAA has to rule on this kind of stuff
quote:
"Subtweeting" is the practice of tweeting about someone without sending them a notification about your tweet by mentioning their Twitter handle. Sometimes, this also means not even mentioning the person you're tweeting about by name but leaving readers to work out from context clues who it is you might be talking about. Usually this is passive-aggressive behavior intended that allows a Twitter user to speak negatively about another Twitter user without specifically mentioning them. But sometimes it's a tactic used by college football coaches to send public messages to players without running afoul of NCAA rules. According to the Texas A&M compliance office, it's now impermissible to subtweet recruits under certain circumstances.

This also doesn't seem to apply to coaching staffs' practice of celebrating verbal commitments by tweeting a hashtag or battle cry of some sort. For instance, when South Carolina gets a commitment, the Gamecocks football staff tweets "#SpursUp." Similarly, Kentucky tweets "Yahtzee!" and Texas A&M tweets "YESSIR!" It appears the NCAA will continue to let this slide for now, even though it technically constitutes publicly commenting on a PSA.

So the hashtags can continue but what about player name puns?

Was it the UNC coach that kept posting a palm tree emoji when he was talking about NCM?

Yeah.
Enforcing this will be a nightmare. Take that coach for example. When he was referencing NCM, he was using Palm Trees and talking about Tampa (where NCM is from). How the hell can you prove that he's talking about NCM? I mean he obviously was but if he says "no I was just enjoying my time in Tampa", I can't just say he's full of shite and penalize him.

Yea OSU's WR coach hashtags zone6 for what OSU calls the receivers. If he says that in regards to recruiting how the heck can they know who he was talking about? It's gonna be a pain

If you're not specifically and publicly naming a recruit it's not a violation.

Did you just skip the entire OP?

You're own athletic department just said subtweeting could be a violation. Subtweeting means you didn't specifically or publicly name a recruit.

They also said that tweeting "#YESSIR" when a recruit commits is not a violation.
Case in point: When Quartney Davis recommitted on January 29th, Sumlin tweeted #YESSIR.
Davis himself didn't announce until NSD but he told the coaching staff.
A kid could commit to a school, ask the school not to announce it, then take all his visits. If the school implies that they've received a commitment, but doesn't name the recruit, no one would know unless that recruit tells someone.

Ok? That's in the article. I don't know why you're explaining that...

It's times like these you know you've run your course of useful value. Here's looking at you NCAA and D.C..

It's common sense. There is no way in hell the NCAA could prove that a palm tree emoji was used to denote a recruit from Tampa. The NCAA might think they have that kind of power, but they don't. Which is par for the course for that organization..

The NCAA needs to abolish itself. They let UNC walk on some of the most egregious, counter-productive, violations in the history of the organization ... but they want to get involved in tweeting.
lulz
