It just depends on who you play.
Yep. If you can squeeze in 3 games vs Top 100 opponents, 2 of them vs Top 50 opponents and go 2-1........you are going to get a significant RPI boost.
Say for Alabama
- beat Ole Miss (80th RPI)
- beat Texas A&M (30th RPI)
- lose to Kentucky (8th RPI)
Leave Nashville with 2 more Top 100 wins, 1 more Top 50 win and a loss to a Top 10 RPI team all on neutral? That's gonna bump our RPI 5-10 spots.

That's why I can't stress enough how important it is for LSU.
1) Kentucky
2) Texas A&M
3) LSU/SCAR
4) SCAR/LSU
5) Alabama/Florida
6) Florida/Alabama
That'll probably be your top 6. Those 3/6 and 4/5 games are going to be huge for a team like LSU (but really all four of those teams). Our first game in the SEC Tournament will be against a top-50 RPI team. Right off the bat.
ETA: If aTm can beat Kentucky, they might actually grab the one seed. But aTm has been so weird lately, it's hard to predict them winning every game after Kentucky. But it's certainly possible.

Awesome post as always
I'll add this for Bama:
Offensively, though they may not be explosive and have pretty dismal numbers, they've had 7 games of double figure 3-point makes. Compared to Grant last year, we had one- Xavier. When Edwards and Coleman get hot from beyond the arc, it opens up the lanes for Obasahan to drive to the basket.
Not to keep comparing to Grant, but since he was notoriously known for blowing games, Alabama is 6-2 this year in games decided by less than five points or fewer.
Still expect LSU, South Carolina, and Florida to make the tourney. Vandy and Georgia simply have too much ground to cover and a much harder stretch to end the season IMO

Don't count your chickens, though. I'd be willing to bet one of the 5/6 seeds doesn't advance. It's the tourney! Just win, baby!

Yep, I agree.
RPI Wizard, if LSU wins out except for losing at Kentucky (not terrible out of the question) and then beats Florida and South Carolina in Nashville and loses to UK on Sunday
22-12, RPI 60
I think that would get them in

Run it if LSU loses one of their next two road games (because they likely will).
RPI in the mid-60s?
RPI in the mid-60s?

Loss at Arkansas
21-13, RPI 65
Loss at Tennessee, same

Hopefully Mississippi State ends up as the 11 seed, so the 5 and 6 seeds avoid them.
They have talent and aren't fun to play. I'd much rather face Auburn or Tennessee if I'm a 5 or 6 seed.
ETA: Actually, for the 5/6 to avoid Mississippi State, either State would have to climb all the way up to #10, or they'd have to lose the 12/13 game on the opening night of the tournament.

Figured, thanks.
I think 12-6 in conference, and two wins in the conference tournament (against two of Alabama, Florida, then South Carolina, aTm), would get LSU to Dayton for the play-in games. But that would be cutting it close.
Pressure is on now for LSU. It'll be interesting to see if we play like our backs are against the wall, or if we play nervous and tight.

Yea, because Auburn basically has no players now (though that was a gutsy win at Arkansas). Tennessee never had any players other than Punter. State plays hard and has enough guys who can have good nights to beat you if you play really poorly. Of those 3 teams we have : Loss @ Auburn, close comeback win at home vs Tennessee, overtime win @ MSU. Now, Auburn isn't the same team it was then, but still.
Honestly though, if Alabama plays really poorly we can lose to anyone in that tournament.

Our schedule is timed perfectly. We lost games during our most difficult stretch compounding with playing like shite. Nothing but slump-busters after Kentucky.
Posted on 2/19/16 at 1:59 pm to SummerOfGeorge
Auburn is scary though. They have nothing to play for except Bruce and being a spoiler. They had no business coming back and beating Arky on the road. Geez, I just hope Bama beats MSU tomorrow, really. The bubble is not a fun place to live.

Great post and great discussion. Like to see SEC get 6 in the dance.

aTm schedule sets up great for them. They already went through the meat grinder of their schedule. They should be fine for a decent awed for the dance.

Thanks for doing the weekly bball standings. It adds a lot to the season on tRant.

OP, thanks for update.
Texas Aggies vs. Uk is on ESPN, not ESPN2.

Only UK and likely A&M with their schedule are locks, Bama, UF and USC are all in similar positions, but UF has the tougher schedule. LSU is squarely on the bubble probably a little outside it now.
Even though, the committee does not rely on the RPI like they used to, the lowest rated RPI to make the tourney ever was in the 60s, LSU's is 81, they will have a decent chance to get that down, but it will probably take wins in the SECT to do it.

It's becoming more and more apparent that Kentucky is the only lock for the NCAA tourney
