Hiring Kevin Steele's the first 2016 victory for Gus Malzahn and Auburn
quote:
Nick Saban is the best head coach in college football. No offense to Will Muschamp, but Saban also is one of the best defensive minds in the sport. He hired Steele not once, but twice
quote:
This is what Saban told me about Steele's ability as a coach two days before their first game together at Alabama in 2007: "I don't know if I could remember anybody that I would say, all around, is any better than him. And I've been around a lot of good coaches."
In reference to Steele's time at Clemson and getting 70 hung on him.
quote:
There's not a living, breathing defensive coordinator whose unit hasn't been skinned alive by a hotshot offense or two. A year ago, Auburn hung 630 yards and 44 points on Saban, Kirby Smart and Alabama, and Ohio State piled on with 537 yards and 42 points. The Tide's defensive brain trust seems to have recovered from that traumatic experience, and so has Steele.
quote:
His LSU defense, which wasn't overstocked with its usual collection of NFL talent, was the first to manhandle the Auburn offense this year. Last night, in a 56-27 Texas Bowl win over Texas Tech, the LSU defense held one of the nation's best offenses three touchdowns below its average.
quote:
Steele brings something else to the table that Auburn needs. A lot of coordinators are more worried about coordinating than recruiting. Not him. He's one of the best recruiters in the business, and he'll immediately give Auburn a chance to address one of its biggest needs - overall talent on defense.

KS is a very good recruiter. I hope that he hits the ground running. His first recruiting job is to convince CL to stay.

Unlike some of the cry babies on here, I'm on board with this hire. Just a couple of days ago Ted Roof was rumored to get the job, that would have been a disaster.

You realize scarb is laughing his off at this hire right? He's an updyke.

I don't give two shits about this hire. All I care about is fixing this fricking offense. As long as Gus is here, the only thing that matters is a QB who doesn't throw backwards fricking passes.

Yes I know he's a bammer.
Our biggest issue is talent. Steele can bring it here. He's also got the experience to "coach it up" when he gets it here"
I'm happy with the hire. Not thrilled about the money or the 3 week process tho

I don't have a huge issue with hiring Kevin Steele, I have a huge issue with giving him a 3 year $4mil contract when we may be looking for a new coach next year.
If we have to buyout the staff, it will make the Chizik era buyouts look like childs play

Agree. We have some on D, just not enough. We should have more, but EJ and his staff did a poor job of coaching it up. If LT stays, I will feel better about this hire.

We won't be. Gus has two years to get things turned around, unless the team quits on him......that does not appear to be a problem though.

If we don't go to a bowl game, I don't see Gus making it to 2017
Big if but not implausible considering we have a new DC/system, losing OL and no clear reason other than hope to think our offense improves

The likelihood of that happening is pretty low, you'd have to admit.

So we hate Scarbinsky until he writes a positive article about us?
For those that say he's a bammer, you haven't read all his articles. He doesn't give two shits about Alabama or Auburn. Just a way to make a living.

Agree. Just like preseason ranking, really recruiting ranking are never false or overinflated.
The NFL Draft is a falsehood that only wants to sell subscriptions.

Except the DL which is a pretty dang important part of the team. Even if everyone plays up from where they ended this year, we still have very little depth

I'd say he's just a pot stirrer. No real allegiance.
