Only two acceptable reason for Spurrier to Quit...

…during the middle of the season. If he is taking the USC job, which I doubt, or if he or a family member has a serious illness, which I hope is not the case.
Anything less than one of the two above mentioned reasons and he is just a fricking quitter. To quit mid season on your team without a serious reason will blemish his career in my opinion.

You're an idiot. If he feels he isnt helping his team being there why stay?

I'm sure he gives a real flying frick as to what you think.
Maybe he is doing what he thinks is best for the program

Or he decided it his life and he can live it how he wants to...

Silly OP.
He might have been asked to retire immediately by the AD and athletic foundation for the good of the program. It makes good recruiting sense to have a permanent coach in place.

Well it fricks up SC recruiting thats for sure. I saw where one commit has already bailed.

I agree. He should have finished out the year unless one of the two reasons listed is actually true. Quitting mid-season basically says, "Hey, guys I give up on our year...sorry". He might be trying to avoid a complete losing season (only has one other one in his career)

I actually agree. Play the season out unless there's some personal issues to tend to. His post game interview said it all. He just sounded beat and done with football and next thing you know he is. Very surprising mid season.

He's a quitter and a dick. He's entertaining but anyone who says he's a good guy never met him of spent any real time around him. The media loves him because he's journalist gold, but he's mostly just a douche.

I have a feeling Spurrier's decision was not made by him alone. Just my opinion.

Fournette made him quit.

Why is this so hard for you Gumps to get?
Spurrier sat down with AD.
Both agreed season was lost.
Spurrier says he's retiring.
Both agreed that by retiring now, SC could have a coach in place shortly after the season who could bring stability to the recruiting process.

You know, when I'm 70 and I decide to hang it up, 2 things I won't be doing, worrying about what people think of me hanging it up, and consulting you on what you think I should be doing at 70.

He more than likely got asked to leave IMO. It isn't very characteristic of him to just throw in the towel midseason. If administration said "hey, this is your last year" than he probably wanted to go out "retired" instead of "fired"

Is it possible there is a third reason and is it possible we may never know that reason? Us humans do such a good job of sitting in judgment of one another.

I disagree. If he's quitting to retire then that is acceptable. He's 70 years old. Most people retire before 70. What would not be acceptable is him quitting to take the USC job.

He is simply being allowed to step down with dignity. That's all this is.

I think maybe somebody in the Administration pissed him off and Spurrier being Spurrier told them to go jump off a cliff.
Also, I wouldn't expect much different from Spurrier. He's not the type to announce it and have a half assed farewell tour to send him off. He doesn't want or need it. Lastly, yes he could keep it a secret, but with the long term well being of USC in mind it's better for him to leave now so they can get a jump start on the coaching search.
(Hope its Muschamp, unless Richt bails too then I hope UGA picks him up.)
