The only reason I can think to root for the Cubs, is knowing that St. Louis would overwhelmingly root for the Royals in WS.

It's like Chief fans rooting for the Raiders in the Superbowl. Just not going to happen.

Sorry, just can't root for the Cubs. Just look at their uniforms! They scream jayhawks.

I even got banned from Phog.net for comparing them to the Cubs. Even they took offense from that.

What is so terrible about the Cubs?

It's not like they run around winning championships.

Raiders have sucked for 20yrs. I don't know a single Chiefs fan that lighten up on their dislike for the Raiders.

And the Cubs have sucked forever. Plus the Raiders played dirty.

What did the Cubs do???

Seriously? I have to explain this to you?

Oldest and biggest baseball rivals

Yankees/Redsox
Giants/Dodgers
Cardinals/Cubs

Do you really think a Yankee fan would ever cheer for the Redsox or vice versa?
How about Giants/Dodgers?

Bill Mueller grew up right down the street from me, and Played for the Cubs, Giants, Dodgers and Redsox.

LINK

Here's a quote from the article from his days playing baseball.
“The Cubs-Cardinals rivalry is a lot like the Red Sox-Yankees for fans,” he explains. “I remember my best friend’s mother said, ‘I don’t think I can root for you anymore since you’re with the Cubs.’ And she practically raised me!”

I knew his mom too, and think I know the woman who said that. His mom worked at the jewelry shop down the street. Bill signed a couple baseballs for my son (as a Giant). Bill is now Asst Hitting coach for the Cards.

btw, a buddy of mine is the son of Vince Lombardi's backfield coach for the Packers, and he taunts me with his dad's Superbowl 1 ring that he wears. I'll ask him if he'd ever root for the Bears.

Actually, no I won't. Because I know he'll either look at me as if I were an idiot or just start laughing.

All those are legit rivalries because of actual reasons. Those teams go at each other all the time - back and forth, trading division titles, pennants, World Series.

The Cubs? They are pitiable. Even with that giant gap between Red Sox WS rings the Sox were never as terrible as the Cubs.

I went poking around to see if there was a reason for this "rivalry" other than the teams have been playing each other for a long time. Found this comment on FanGraphs from 2011:

quote:

The single most overrated rivalry is Cubs/Cards. Seriously, what the hell has that rivalry ever produced other than “this is a rivalry?” Even Cards fans can’t tell me why it’s a rivalry, they just say “o I hate the Cubs”. The rivalry started, I’m pretty sure, in like 1880 and hasn’t had much steam since the Cubs last won a WS. Games against each other rarely mean anything and I can’t think of a single memorable playoff against each other. I can’t remember them ever having a fight on the field either. I’m sure it’s happened, but it doesn’t stick out in my mind at all.

Perhaps after this year it will get some juice.

Wikipedia is pretty lame: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinals%E2%80%93Cubs_rivalry
After the 1920s there's some commentary about a meaningless game in 1984 and the HRoid race in 1998. That's it.

I understand it from the Cubs side, they suck and would be envious of the success of the Cards. The Cards though? I don't get it. Some say it's the inferiority complex St. Louis has for Chicago in general. Maybe that's it.

You are right in the sense that there have never really been any meaningful games between both teams until last week. However, I have always disliked the Scrubs regardless of how bad they have been.If they win it all I won't be watching much ESPN at all.Already hearing "life long Cubs fans" show up out of nowhere when just a month ago they couldn't care less about MLB (looking at you Danica Patrick).

I was just wondering why you'd post a after editing a double post.

Why didn't you just use the double post you'd edited to say what you wanted to say?

You found a fan site with this opinion. Really?

The same could be said about the MU-kU rivalry. You can apply the same arguments to support the Beakers.

The fact is, it is a rivalry. A strong one, and an old one. Most MLB teams can't name a true rival. What is KC's? It was Oakland for years, but it's gone. Yankees? Don't think Yankee fans would think so.

You can argue all you want that it's overrated. The fact is, it is a true rivalry.

Cubs = Beakers
Same colors, same futility.

I will bask in the futility of the Cubs, as much as I bask in the futility of kU football.

No way I would ever root for kU to win a football game, even if it could "juice up" the rivalry.
