I know a lot of people are acting like theyre glad Chavis is gone and that Steele will do better with coach O helping. But are you really glad there was a change made? Are you really happy with Steele instead of Chavis? I know back in January a lot of posters were crying because Chavis left and upset that we settled for steele. Seems like a lot of posters forgot about this and are just trying to convince themselves that theyre happy. Is it because atm fans got under your skin too much? And you wanna believe?

Nobody is happy with someone who coaches 32 conference games and loses 31 of them.
Someone of that caliber cannot even be called a football coach.

Thank god he's not the head coach

To be truthful for me...I think Chavis is a better coach, but I want to see how a different direction will go. And the recruiting will be better.

Ed Orgeron helps, a lot. And Steele has Orgeron who was at USC and one of the best Dline coaches in the country and Corey Raymond who is one of the best secondary coaches in the country. I really don't think we will see any drop off at all. Steele won't have to do it by himself, and if it makes you sleep better at night thinking LSU's D will be that much worse then more power to you....

Most LSU fans weren't but not a damn thing the base could do about it,time to move on.The upgrade at Dline and overall recruiting helped.

He isn't a bad coordinator, but his prevent defenses at the ends of games made me scream at my TV. I...just...can't deal with any more late losses to Bama. His defenses at the ends of games reminded me too much of Mora's Saints' defenses at the ends of games. I'm happy he left.

There are a few gripes with Chavis but not many. He's a very good coordinator. Towards the end he got very lazy on the recruiting trails and the lapses late in our biggest games were infuriating.
I wasn't happy to see him go but I wasn't crushed either. Sometimes you just need a change of scenery or some new energy injected into your program. I think Chavis and LSU got just that.

What an original thread. I'm glad someone addressed this topic.

I'm glad Chavis is gone. I think he had grown stale and wasn't performing well. The hiring of Kevin Steele wasn't a good one in my mind at the beginning until I researched him and learned his scheme. I think he'll do fine. I was listening to Culotta and Prince the morning Ed Orgerons hire was announced and i couldn't have been happier. I celebrated by eating a huge slice of King cake dipped in my coffee man. Eddy O was a monumental hire because of how proven he is and how much energy he has.
Overall I think we're better off with fresh blood. Ed Orgeron and Steele both have deep ties with the SEC and ball out on the recruiting trail. I think a more aggressive scheme will help our defense with how Chavis recruited towards speed over size. We should be blitzing a lot more and give a lot different looks than we did the last few years. I think the new defensive approach will do wonders for us because opponents won't know the defense well.

A change was needed, not real excited with Steele hire.

I wasn't upset that Chavis ,eft and we shoved Brick Haley out the door. I will admit, however, that I'm not sold on Steele. He's got a great opportunity here, I hope he's up to the task.

I was initially upset then Steele was hired and I was depressed because I thought it meant no coach O. But the combo of the two being any wish I could of had. Recruiting alone took a huge step and the dline coaching was a huge upgrade. So honestly I prefer what we have to what we had

Chavis was a rock of stability. He was a good DC but he wasn't irreplaceable and he had lots of faults. The biggest issue with Chavis leaving is when and how he did it. He left LSU high and dry unexpectedly at a crucial moment at the end of a recruiting class and at a time that made it extremely difficult for LSU to court elite DC's.
LSU would have liked to get a DC with a better resume than Steele, but the timing made the pool of candidates very limited. Whether Steele can scheme and have a defense as successful as Chavis with LSU talent is up in the air, but I think certainly many LSU fans are genuinely excited about the recruiting boost offered by Steele and Orgeron. Anytime you replace a consistent and steady presence running your defense it is a risk, and I think most LSU fans would have chosen to maintain Chavis going into what is expected to be a year with tremendous potential for this team. That being said, the desire to go in a different direction from Chavis is also not just some defensive reaction to him leaving for A&M as the Aggies wish to portray it. There was a lot of frustration with some of Chavis' personnel decisions and lack of pass rush. Chavis forced the issue so expectedly LSU fans are washing their hands of him and hoping the obvious recruiting boost offered by Steele and Orgeron can be supplemented with a more aggressive defensive strategy that will pay dividends. The results are yet to be seen but the lionization of Chavis by the A&M fans just shows how delusional and out of touch they are with reality. He had his detractors over the years at Tennessee and LSU. He is a good DC but not what they make him out to be.
I would rather have Chavis than Steele coaching LSU's defense this year but that's primarily because you know what you are getting with Chavis. If LSU would have had 6 months or so to search out a DC replacement for Chavis I think most would have been much less upset about the loss TBH.

I'm personally glad he is gone. Did nothing for recruiting and Brick Haley was terrible. Chavis is a good coach, but his calls at the end of games were brutal to watch. I will hold judgement on Steele. Orgeron is a breath of fresh hair. With the talent on defense I'm really not concerned. The dline will be improved with Coach O's leadership. Steele was in charge of LB's at Bama so I think that will help our young LB's develop. Secondary is great again.

If we didn't have Oregon or Raymond on staff I'd more than likely be concerned but we do so no worry there. I'm also hoping to see a more aggressive approach with the addition of Steele.
eta: But no, I am not sad that Chavis is gone by any means.
