What happens when you die. I'm an atheist but I wonder about the after life all the time. Does our body just turn to dust? Reincarnation or what? Just curious.

The standard atheist answer is that your consciousness is the product of biological processes in your brain, an d what you perceive as consciousness will end when your brain dies. So basically, yeah, dust.

I suppose the agnostic answer would be "Nobody knows for sure."

I think it's even more interesting to learn about what the different flavors of Christianity say will happen after you die, because they don't completely agree. Check out what Orthodox Christians think "Hell" really is, for example.

It's a huge sign of our Hegelian intellectual epidemic that people who reject religion move all the way across the spectrum to thinking there is nothing at all.

If you set advise religious or philosophical tenets and just look at the science of life, you'll note the following:

1. Life arose on this planet via chemical reactions that became progressively more complex; the most complex form of life is the human being with his big brain;

2. Life does not begin at conception. You are an extension of the life that began 3.8 billion years ago. A live sperm and a live egg joined to become a zygote, or seed, that grew into you. With the tree of life that we're a part of, life cannot begin, only end; and,

3. There is no empirical evidence whatsoever that any parts of the complex chemical assembly that is a body continues to live on after the process of death occurs. Many people think of the mind or conscious as some kind of ephemeral being that can exist independently of the brain. However, because the mind or conscious are merely processes of the brain, they stop when the brain cells all die.

So, we have to regard death as the stoppage of all the chemical processes that maintain a body in a living state.

I don't know, but I tend to think that I just die.

Agnostics believe it's possible there could be a god, but you could never interact with him. More or less correct?

What do you call someone that believes there most likely is a god, and he doesn't give a shite about us?

There is no 'you' in atheism. 'You' consist of only a sack of chemical reactions created by a series of incomprehensibly complex chemical reactions.

1- there is a God. The ONLY God. If you die without salvation that only he can bring through Jesus Christ who sacrificed himself on the cross to pay for your sins, then you will spend eternity in hell paying for your own sins.

2- All man has an innate desire, longing, and yearning for God. You've heard the saying that there are no atheists in foxholes. That saying burns atheists up until they are the ones in the foxhole.

3- Accept Jesus as your savior and you will feel that huge hole in your being filled with the only thing that can fill it: Salvation through Jesus' SACRIFICE and redemption (not to be confused with justification) from your sins. When we are saved and submit ourselves to God, we become a new creature (not a perfect one) from the inside out. It's a supernatural transformation.

I believe the same thing happens to people when we die that everyone else believes happens to dogs, cats, birds, etc. Our consciousness ceases and we just no longer exist.

It is by far the simplest and most likely scenario, thus unless given evidence to the contrary I see no reason to dismiss the null hypothesis.

If you are atheist, there is no afterlife. You're just dead. You believe you cease to exist. Amirite? If you think there is an afterlife, you are something other than Atheist.
